The game Fatal Frame is a horror series with its earliest game released in 2001 for the Playstation 2 and the latest game released in 2014 for the Wii U. What connects the series is the camera obscura, a camera that can capture the spirits of ghosts. Each game has different protagonists who get spirited away to terrifying ghost realms where they must use the camera to ward off hostile ghosts and complete puzzles to find a way out.

With four games in the series, its fans have seen a lot of ghosts, hundreds in fact if you include the non-hostiles. There are certainly those that have made more impressions than others. Here is a list of the ten most frightening ghosts players had to fight off in the series, ranked.

10 Ayako Haibara

Ayako is one of a couple of little girl ghosts from the fourth game, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. Her room is definitely one of the scariest in the game, as doll arms hang down from the ceiling and are easy to bump into. Ayako also is far from friendly. T

he more the player explores, the more documents they find that tell disturbing stories about Ayako and how she hurts nurses and other children.

9 Woman In Box

The woman in the box is a ghost that makes appearances throughout the series. She has made players never feel safe around boxes, as she crawls out of them and attacks.

In Fatal Frame II (the most popular game of the series) the ghost would walk incredibly slow with her hair covering her face and eventually burst into a run at the player, revealing her scary sunken eyes and screaming mouth.

8 Chitose Hachibana

Chitose may be just as scared as the player, but that does not stop her from being one of the scariest ghosts in the series. She is from Fatal Frame II and is most known as Itsuki's little sister. She is blind, has a bell attached to her, and likes to hide in closets. So players have the eerie experience of hearing her crying from closets, and the little jingle of her bell as she runs around the house.

Battling her is another matter. She renders the player blind and jumps at them from the dark.

7 Broken Neck Woman

Broken neck lady has many backstories, as she appears in many games. They range from suicide by hanging or falling from a window. For players who play a lot, they might find her less scary due to how common she is.

For those that are just playing these games for the first time though, broken neck lady is horrifying.

6 Watashi

In Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, there is a ghost, Kageri Sendou, with a doll version of twin sister in a wheelchair. It is just spooky seeing them around. One of the most unsettling moments in the game is running into the red wheelchair without the doll in it. The dolls' name is "Watashi" and it is one of the many scary dolls the Fatal Frame series has made.

Fighting Watashi is terrifying as it often double teams with Kageri. Unlike most ghosts, Watashi actually attacks the player in a disturbing zombie-like walk if she gets close enough.

5 The Tall Woman

The one and only ghost from Maiden of Black Water to make it onto this list is the tall woman ghost. She was never before seen in other games, and it a nightmare to come across. She appears to be inspired by Slenderman with her long arms and tall height. Besides that though, she has a disturbingly wide smile.

Another part of what makes her so horrifying is her lack of backstory. She is an unsolved mystery.

4 The Kiryu Twins

These twins are the face of Fatal Frame II despite being side characters. However, it is a good call because they are quite memorable. They are similar to Watashi and Kageri in that one is human and one is a doll replacement of a twin sister.

Unlike Watashi though, it is very hard to tell these two apart, and that influences the fight. The doll cannot be damaged and the only difference in their lip color, which you can only see if you let them get very close to you.

3 Falling Woman

Falling woman is another horrifying ghost to come out of Fatal Frame II. Her name is exactly what her behavior is, she falls. She made staircases a nightmare, as her blood-curdling scream would be the first indicator of her arrival as she falls past the player and onto the floor.

In fighting her, she constantly falls while screaming and the player has to keep backing up to not get grabbed.

2 Crawling Woman

Crawling woman was every player nightmare out of Fatal Frame III. She moved under the floorboards of the manor like a spider, which is already upsetting to see while walking around the house. However, it's a whole other level when players have to crawl through the floorboards themselves and meet this ghost up close.

There is very little room to move, and this ghost moves fast.

1 Sae Kurasawa

The final boss of Fatal Frame II, Sae, is memorable due to her laughter, design, and invincibility. The player is able to hear her maniacal laughter throughout the village.

When she appears, you have to run as the camera is useless against her until the end of the game. She is also slowly possessing your sister, so you have to always be on guard.
