A remaster of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is coming to consoles outside just the Wii U on October 28th, and the horror fans are excited to get chased by scary ghosts this Halloween season. While the game is actually the fifth in its line, all the other games are hard to access due to being on retired consoles or not being available outside Japan.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a must-play for fans of Japanese horror. While there are many ghosts in the game, there are some that are known to be the scariest of all. These ghosts prompt players to pause the game and turn the lights on.
10 Tall Woman
Fatal Frame's Tall Woman can give Resident Evil's Lady Dimitrescu a run for her money. Her unnatural height in itself is scary, but her permanent smile is what really makes her terrifying.
The player meets her multiple times throughout the game, and she is often hostile when they do. Her first encounter is in the Forbidden Valley. Her backstory is shrouded in mystery, but it is known that she is an urban legend in the area.
9 Kirika Reizen
This undead shrine maiden is first encountered in chapter four, in the Unfathomable Forest. Like many ghosts on the mountain, she ended her own life, and one of the local maidens bore witness to her death.
Her spirit was contaminated by the failed ritual, and now she constantly relives her own death while also attacking the living as a hostile ghost. Another fact that makes Kirika terrifying is her power that allows her to possess the living and make them end their own lives.
8 Hiori Magabuchi
Hiori is another ghost that ended her own life in front of a local shrine maiden, this time by jumping down from a waterfall. She made a big deal out of wearing her favorite outfit in her final moments, and thus recognizable mostly because of her crimson kimono.
As a ghost though, her face is disfigured from her fall, and she tries to push off any innocent people that make the mistake of getting too close to the waterfall edge. Her ghost can be found at the Last Drop, Waterfall View Path, and the Moutain Trail.
7 Fuyuhi Himino
Fuyuhi is a character that becomes a ghost. During her life, , she went to the mountain to find her lost friend, Haruka. She goes alone, and Yuuri finds her in a daze. As they go home together, Fuyuhi runs off and ends up killing herself due to ghost possession.
Her story does not end there, though. Throughout the game, her ghost can come out and attack the player.
6 Shiragiku
Shiragiku is a unique ghost, as she is sometimes hostile and sometimes helpful. At the tender age of seven years old, she was sentenced to live no longer in order to be a sacrifice in one of the rituals. Even in life, though, she had supernatural abilities that allowed her to read people's minds.
Shiragiku can be found all over the various locations of the game. Her fights are particularly frightening, as she uses faceless dolls and fake versions of herself as a defense.
5 Ose Kurosawa
Naturally, one of the scariest ghosts is the series is the main antagonist herself, Ose. She was killed in the Yuukon Ritual (also known as the Ghost Marriage ritual) which maidens like herself do in order to purge away all the pain and grief they have witnessed. In the process, though, they die and relive all the pain and death they have seen as well.
Ose's ritual failed, and the loneliness, pain, and suffering all spread to spirits around the mountain, resulting in all the other malicious spirits in the games. Her ghost is a horrifying figure, and she's the terrifying final boss that players have to fight in the end.
4 Matchmaker And Funeral Celebrant
These old women are matriarchs that supervise many of the rituals on the mountain. They were killed when Ose failed her ritual, and their withered ghosts are terrifying despite not always being hostile. When they are hostile though, they are even worse.
The Funeral Celebrant, who can be encountered in Omagakyo, carries a mirror to blind her victims and stuff them in boxes. The Matchmaker is encountered in the Union House and is less hostile; however, she is certainly creepy.
3 Hiromichi Kashima
Hiromichi is a ghost encountered in Hikami Tunnel, who died in a terrible manner. He crashed his car due to a ghost falling on his windshield — but was not the part that ended his life. He crawled out and attempted to get to safety, but the car was possessed by a ghost and proceeded to run him over.
Now he is a ghost himself, always crawling and begging for help from under the car that ended his life. He'll make players think twice before getting near any cars in the game.
2 Shizuku Mikomori
Shizuku is a non-hostile ghost, but her design, backstory, and appearances are all terrifying. She died in a terrible umbrella accident. When she was alive, she would visit the mountain in the rain to give flowers to those that ended their lives. During a storm, her umbrella got caught in the wind and gouged her eye.
She is first encountered at Hikami tunnel. Sometimes the players see her, and sometimes they just see her crimson umbrella and get the sense that they are being watched.
1 Shion & Shiranui
No Fatal Frame title is complete without creepy dolls, and Maiden of Black Water Definitely did not miss that mark. These two figures are found in the Shrine of Dolls. While they were never alive in the first place, they have gained sentience due to being used in so many sinister rituals.
The Shrine of Dolls itself is one of the scariest locations in the game, and these two hostile ghost dolls really take the cake for some of the creepiest enemies in the game.
