One more release date is killed by the continual disaster that is the year 2020. Those hoping for even a bit of reprieve in the form of a silly action spectacle will sadly have to adjust expectations. Fast & Furious 9 is just the latest in a long, long string of films to be pushed back to 2021. The decision reportedly comes after Universal decided to officially push No Time to Die back as well, forcing the studio to realign its whole release schedule.

It's not as bad as it could be, though. Thankfully the release date has only shifted one month back, as opposed to the entire year that some films have decided to skip. Fast & Furious 9 is now expected to release in May of 2021, when the film will, hopefully, hit theaters with all the over the top vehicle insanity that fans have come to know and love. This time around however, the gang faces off against John Cena and Charlize Theron, who have teamed up to antagonize everyone's favorite team.

Of course, there's no guarantee that the film actually will come out in May of next year. That will inevitably be determined by the state of the coronavirus pandemic at that time. As quite a few studios have learned this year, sometimes the world just isn't going to cooperate. As of this time, there's been no talk or rumors of Fast & Furious 9 taking on any alternative release format. While other films like Mulan have taken VOD as their primary method of release, it would seem that Universal is either unwilling to pursue that option for F9, or they assume that the film is far enough out as to not need such an alternative.

If it feels like it's been a while since there's been anything to hear  about F9. The last official trailer released in January, which feels like a lifetime ago in the long and arduous year that is 2020. Hopefully by next year things will have cleared up in terms of the nationwide lockdowns, and folks can return to enjoying all the big budget films that had to hold off during the quarantine. When that time does come, fans can eagerly anticipate the return of Vin Diesel and all his daredevil road racing friends.

Fast & Furious 9 will release May 28, 2021. At least in theory.
