Highlights

  • Far Cry 7 rumors suggest new features such as non-linear gameplay and a timer mechanic for completing the campaign.
  • The game may combine elements from Far Cry 3 and 5, potentially featuring a cult and a tropical island setting.
  • The release date for Far Cry 7 is uncertain, but it may not arrive until 2025, marking the longest gap between Far Cry titles.

Ubisoft's Far Cry franchise is one of the most popular and long-running open-world FPS IPs. The first title was released in 2004, but it was 2012's Far Cry 3 that arguably put it on the map alongside Ubisoft's other flagship series, Assassin's Creed. Following that, Far Cry has been a staple in the developer's catalog, consistently releasing numbered titles as well as spin-offs and various DLCs, with the latest mainline being FC 6 in 2021.

Since then, though, Far Cry has gone through a period of radio silence. Though there has not been any official word from the studio on its plans, that hasn't stopped Far Cry 7 leaks and rumors circulating throughout the course of 2023, as speculation mounted the more the deafening silence resounded. As such, there is still at this time little currently known regarding what its status in 2024 could be, and it should be kept in mind that much of the information below is based on what minimal substantial news about FC 7 is available.

Far Cry 7 is rumored to be in development, and if it is, it should bring back a classic feature that has helped define the previous entries.

Far Cry 7 Rumors

So far, it's confirmed that FC 5 narrative designer and lead writer Drew Holmes is helming the IP as director. Aside from that, rumored possibilities surrounding Far Cry 7 include:

  • Ubisoft Montreal in a developing role.
  • A plot framed around players rescuing family members from a cult called the Sons of Truth.
  • Set on a fictitious tropical island called Kimsan, located in the “Yellow Sea next to Korea.”
  • Titled Far Cry: Rise.
  • Having a non-linear structure and/or a twist on extraction-style gameplay.
  • Implementing a 72-hour in-game timer mechanic to complete the campaign.

Based on the cult and island items in particular, it could be the case that Far Cry 7 will combine elements from FC 3 and 5, while mixing up the existing formula with the non-linear and timer elements. This is pure conjecture, however, and aside from Holmes being appointed director, none of the rest is official in any way, though it does spark some interesting angles for the future of Far Cry.

Far Cry Pattern May Narrow Down FC7 Release Date

The Far Cry series has had a fairly consistent release schedule since 2012:

Title

Released

Far Cry 3

2012

Far Cry 4

2014

Far Cry Primal

2016

Far Cry 5

2018

Far Cry 6

2021

There was a steady two-year window between FC 3 and 5, which jumped to three years separating 5 and 6. Some reports allege that fans won't see another Far Cry until Spring 2025, and if true, would mark the longest gap to date. Assuming the next won't be at least until 2024, though, the wait is already on par with the previous interval. One other item of note was the announcement in November that Far Cry 6 will not be getting any more updates. This may point to production on Far Cry 7 ramping up soon, although that is also speculation.

Two spin-offs, Blood Dragon and New Dawn, were also released in 2013 and 2019 respectively, while a trilogy of villain-based DLCs came out between Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.

Ubisoft is well-known for having multiple irons in the fire, with concurrent projects in the works across various studios and partners. Among them, it is confirmed to be co-developing and publishing Star Wars Outlaws, which currently has a planned 2024 release. Given the IP and its high expectations, it's possible a lot of attention is being given to Outlaws at the moment instead of Far Cry. Nevertheless, Ubisoft has not officially confirmed or commented on a lot of the above, making it difficult to pinpoint what might be expected from Far Cry in 2024.
