Sometimes fans get a little bit tired of waiting for officially licensed products to get released, so they take matters into their own hands. Despite being shown at E3 2017, many are still waiting for word on Retro Studios' Metroid Prime 4, development of which was restarted in 2019 and subsequently, the game is now being compared Nintendo's Elden Ring. Fortunately, there is something fans can play in the meantime.

Although just a demo at the moment, a hardcore fan-base has got together to create a 2D version of 2002's Metroid Prime, known simply as Prime 2D. Referred to as Team SCU, these dedicated gamers have been working hard on the project which was originally touted as a joke, but has since emerged as something real.

Although a recreation of the GameCube classic, this version of Metroid Prime is more in keeping with the aesthetics of the original Metroid games from a bygone era, with its pixelated visuals and two-dimensional side-scrolling antics. The download page for the demo suggests that fans of the original will recognize many elements in this iteration, hinting that the developers haven't veered too far off course.

Video game fans are nothing if not devoted to their passion, especially when it comes to faithful recreations. Recently, a Spider-Man fanatic recreated the whole of the PS4 game's New York City entirely in Disney Infinity. With recreations a-plenty, and the PC modding community breathing new life into older games, no one can say that gamers are not passionate about what they do.

The demo for Prime 2D is available now, while Metroid Prime 4 is currently in development.
