The Fallout series saw a big shift with the release of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. However, fans who miss the style of the original titles will soon be able to play Fallout 2's canceled sequel in Fallout: New Vegas thanks to a mod.

The sequel, which still goes by its development codename Van Buren, was being developed by Black Isle Studios before it was canceled in 2003. As details about the game have leaked online in the years since it was revealed that the sequel was set in a Southwest Commonwealth in the year 2253, 12 years after Fallout 2. Now, a group of modders is working to add it to Fallout: New Vegas' sizable library of mods.

The mod, known as Fallout: Revelation Blue since the Van Buren name is owned by Wasteland 3 developer inXile, also released a reveal teaser to give a small look at the mod in action. Fallout: Revelation Blue uses assets from Fallout 3 as well as Fallout: New Vegas, and is aiming to recreate Van Buren in as accurate and faithful of a way as possible. To do this, the mod will consider Fallout: New Vegas as non-canonical, as some of Van Buren's original characters and factions ended up appearing in the latter title, so it definitely seems that players shouldn't expect the mod to be Fallout: New Vegas 2.

The mod's announcement page on Nexus Mods has been hidden for now, but it did list a number of Fallout: New Vegas mods that would be required to run it. There also has been no information released on when the mod is aiming to release, but the developer's message left on the mod's hidden Nexus Mods page says that the team is planning on releasing a demo for the mod's Tibbets Prison Facility ahead of its release. Fallout: New Vegas still enjoys a large community of players even now, so many years after its release, and the Revelation Blue mod will likely only help maintain that.

While the mod is far from the announcement of an official Fallout release, it does give fans something new to be excited about while they wait for a new Fallout title. It will be interesting to see Van Buren finally come to life in some form, and it will be interesting to see how Revelation Blue compares to the Fallout 2 mod that is also based heavily on Van Buren. Hopefully, Fallout fans will be able to get their hands on Fallout: Revelation Blue sooner rather than later.

Fallout: New Vegas is available now on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
