Bottlecaps have replaced dollars in Fallout 76, as well as in the rest of the Fallout series. Following the nuclear holocaust, the caps 0f Nuka Cola bottles became a de-facto currency among the survivors. They were adopted because of their relative scarcity, and because they were hard to counterfeit with the Nuka factories having been destroyed in the war.

However, although Bottlecaps are the new currency, players can still find Pre-War money in Fallout 76. Normally represented as thick wads of bills, the money that would once have been vital is almost worthless after the nuclear war. We say almost worthless, because there actually is a reason to collect Pre-war money in Fallout 76, and it's not just about hoarding useless cash. Players can convert each Pre-War money into Cloth, a useful and hard-to-acquire crafting component.

Stores and Safes

Players looking to find Pre-War money junk items in Fallout 76 should start in the urban areas of the map. The most common places to find Pre-War money are locations where it would have been stored before the war began. This means that safes and cash registers are two of the best loot containers to search for.

Safes are almost exclusively found in built up areas, generally either in bedrooms, offices or behind store counters. Cash registers can also be easily found in Pre-War shops, particularly in grocery stores. The improved inventory space in Fallout 76 should mean that players can carry plenty of Pre-War money home.

Other Locations

In addition to safes and cash registers, Pre-War money can also be found in some more unexpected places. Settler corpses can occasionally contain Pre-War money, and can be found in numbers in towns like Flatwoods. Secure transport containers carried by cargobots can also contain Pre-War money. In particular, the cargobot during Fallout 76's Collision Course event quest contains more than usual, normally around 100 Pre-War money.

A varying amount of Pre-War money, somewhere between 40 and 50, can be found in a supply drop during the Dropped Connection event. An Enclave event quest, Dropped Connection can be performed in Berkeley Springs, Harpers Ferry, or Watoga. Finally, a stack of Pre-War money can be found during the Back on the Beat quest, at the Morgantown bank. Both of these quests include some major fights, so players should make sure to come locked and loaded in Fallout 76.
