Fallout 76 SPECIAL & Perks Explained

SPECIAL will be familiar to experienced Fallout players, with these seven stats affecting how your player interacts with the wasteland. When starting a new character, you can start from level one for complete control of your build, or you can immediately start a level 20 character if you want to jump straight into some of the later content that's been released.

In Fallout 76, you gain a skill point every time you level up, which you can then invest in one of your SPECIAL stats. Leveling up a SPECIAL stat will reward you with a pack of Perk Cards for that stat, which can then be equipped to gain various abilities and effects. Each SPECIAL stat can be leveled 15 times. The numbers on the top left of the Perk Cards cannot add up to more than the level of that SPECIAL stat. This forces you to be smart about what Perk Cards you equip. Legendary perks can be unlocked at high level milestones such as 50, 75, 100, etc.

How To Rank Up Perk Cards in Fallout 76

Perks do not level up like in previous Fallout games. Most Perk Cards can be ranked up, and you should do this as you progress through the wasteland. Level 1 Perk Cards will not be useful at all in the more difficult areas of the game.

Look for any pairs of Perk Cards you may have on your leveling screen. Press the indicated button at the bottom of the screen to combine these duplicate cards. This will rank them up one level and make their effects stronger. A Perk Card will display "Max Rank" when it can no longer be ranked up. If you have an excess amount of duplicates, they can be scrapped for Perk Coins. These coins can be used to upgrade your legendary perks.
