Fallout 76 has received a large influx of players following the release of the Fallout TV show. The game has even reached the largest number of concurrent players it's ever had. New players may be confused initially by some of the game's mechanics, as opposed to other games in the series. Fallout 76 is first and foremost a multiplayer game, so some features have been modified for this purpose.

Lockpicking is a way to crack safes and doors in the wasteland. In previous games, all you had to do was assign points into lockpicking as you leveled up. This guide will show you how to level up lockpicking in Fallout 76, along with the ways this useful mechanic has been altered.

Lockpicking in Fallout 76 Explainedfallout-76-lockpicking-skill

Locks were separated into difficulties in previous Fallout games. In Fallout 76 there are four levels of lockpicking skill. You must be at the required skill level to break into these locks. If you are not at the requisite skill level, you cannot even attempt to break into these higher level locks.

Lockpicking is still mechanically the same as most Bethesda games. You need bobby pins to pick locks, and you will use the analog sticks to rotate the bobby pin around the lock, then twist it until the lock is open. The goal is to find the sweet spot that will allow the lock to turn all the way. The higher the skill level on the lock, the smaller this sweet spot will be. Tumblers Today magazines can be found or purchased throughout the wasteland. Reading these magazines will temporarily boost your skill and give locks larger sweet spots, making them easier to crack.

If you want to level up your lockpicking skill, you will need to raise your Perception stat. Every level will give you one skill point to invest in your SPECIAL stats until you reach the maximum level of 15. Perception is also tied to your ability to detect enemies and raising your shooting accuracy.

Every time you level up a SPECIAL stat, you will receive a pack of perk cards tied to it. The Picklock perk cards will become available to you as you level up. The numbers on the top left of the cards must add up to less than or the exact level of your SPECIAL stat to be equipped. The Picklock cards cannot be ranked up like other perks and must all be equipped at the same time.

  • Skill 0 Locks - No Card Required
  • Skill 1 Locks - Equip the Picklock card available at Level 5
  • Skill 2 Locks - Equip the original Picklock and Expert Picklock card available at level 19
  • Skill 3 Locks - Equip the first two cards and the Master Picklock card available at level 40
