In Fallout 76, players will pretty much always be collecting various items to scrap and stow away as crafting materials. Like other games in the Fallout universe, this experience is a core mechanic, and represents a significant portion of overall gameplay. And while many of these items seem to amass on their own, there are some, like screws, that have the potential to cause frustration.

Screws can be a particular menace in Fallout 76, largely due to the fact that, despite needing a near constant supply of them, they often seem difficult to find. Luckily for players, they only seem difficult to find. While there will always be a struggle to gather enough screws to craft and repair everything that needs it, there are several tips that will help players manage that struggle. This guide will help players ease that burden, and show how to find and farm screws in Fallout 76.

There are essentially two ways to get items from the world of Fallout 76: scavenging and purchasing. It is possible to get screws through both methods. Buying screws is by far the easier option, but it is prohibitively expensive for most newcomers. This leaves scavenging, and this can be a very fruitful method, if you know where to look. While it is possible to farm screws in Fallout 76, it may not be

When preparing to look for any item, make sure to set the game to highlight it. This can be done in the Pip-Boy or at a crafting station. In the Pip-Boy, go to the Junk menu under the Item tab. With any item highlighted, go to component view. Go down the list, and select Screw when it appears. Now, any item in the world that contains screws will be marked with the magnifying glass symbol.

There are several items that contain screws in Fallout 76, which is the first step to setting out to farm them. Here is a list of the most common items you will come across. Keep it handy when looking for screws:

  • Desk Fan (x1 Screw): Desk Fans are probably the closest that players will come to being able to actually 'farm' screws. They can be found in large numbers in various office buildings. They tend to be found everywhere, sometimes in small numbers, but if you set out to find them, you will. Site Alpha, Site Bravo, Site Charlie each have several. Sugar Grove has over ten, but that might not be accessible until late game. Head into towns and cities, nearly every building will have desk fans.
  • Typewriter (x1 Screw): Typewriters can be found in office buildings around the world in Fallout 76. Consider where a typewriter may be found in the real world, and apply that logic. Newspaper buildings, such as the Charleston Herald will usually contain them. There are several in the EasternRegional Penitentiary at the southern end of Toxic Valley. Schools are also a good place to look.
  • Hot Plate (x1 Screw): Hot Plates can be found in kitchens and cafeterias all across the wasteland. Check in homes, schools, any location where cooking is done.

These are the items you will see most commonly, but are by no means the only items to contain screws. The most important tool you have is the marking system, which will point out any item in the game that contains screws. Here is a small list of tips to consider outside of junk items.

  • Keep an eye out for small white boxes on tables and shelves. Loose Screws are fairly common, but easy to miss.
  • Look out for Super Mutants and Wendigos. Both of these enemy types commonly hold loose screws.

While many vendors will sell screws, the easiest location to go, where screws can be found consistently, is the Whitespring Mall, inside the Whitespring Resort. Inside the mall, there is a long hallway where several vendors have set up shop. Look for the following locations:

  • The Creekside Lodge, which has a small chalkboard sign in front of it announcing that there are local goods inside, specifically from the Brotherhood of Steel. The Protectron here will usually sell screws.
  • Friedrich at the Artisan's Corner sometimes has screws as well. This is located in the large room that contains all the crafting stations. Between them and Creekside, at least one will have screws. There are several more vendors in the building that may carry them as well.
  • Without any of Fallout 76's Charisma-based perks, a box of 10 screws will cost 230 caps.
