While the original Fallout games from the late 1990s are something of a cult classic, especially among the PC community, the third installment released by Bethesda helped explode the series into a more popular, mainstream status. Among all the titles currently available, 2010's New Vegas is generally considered one of the stronger entries, though Fallout 3 and 4 are still highly regarded, with 76 slowly improving with updates after a rocky launch. Given the popularity of New Vegas, it's hardly surprising that some fans are currently recreating the Mojave landscape in Fallout 4.

Uploading early access files to Nexusmods recently, a bunch of modders, and no doubt fans of the Fallout games, are currently looking to bring the desert wasteland of Fallout: New Vegas into the modern gaming era through a more up-to-date engine. Titled "Project Mojave," the description says that the team have been working on the mod for four months, and is a complete remake of the New Vegas strip that the 2010 game is set in. The page does insist that this is currently a work in progress, in which players will be able to explore the lower parts of the map "for now."

Some of the features that have been recreated so far include, more than 800 remade assets, three functional casinos, new creatures, as well some new Fallout: New Vegas-style weapons. On top of that, there are already a number of locations present for players to discover, such as Nipton Road Reststop, some of the casino suites, and Good Luck Trailer Park. There's even a trailer showing some of the familiar locales and assets that the team have put in so far, with an air of faithful recreation really selling the appeal of a New Vegas game being built in Fallout 4's engine.

Although it's more than a decade old now, Fallout: New Vegas is one of those games that has aged well. Many fans remark on its story, plus the fact that it was developed by Obsidian, a studio which consists of some of the developers from the original Fallout team. Sadly, Obsidian didn't stay onboard when it came to the next game in the franchise.

There are some truly incredible Fallout mods out there, some of which alter the games all-together or add some incredibly in-depth quests and stories. Project Mojave does something that fans of previous games will no doubt enjoy. While it's still in early access, it will be really interesting to see what the final version will end up like, especially given that the modders have accomplished so much in just a few months.

Fallout: New Vegas is available on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
