When players first start Fallout 4they are given the choice between a male character and a female character. Whichever is not chosen will become an NPC, either named Nate or Nora. Players get to see their experience as the Great War starts and the misfortunes that occur to whichever character survives.

The Sole Survivor is thrust into a new world, inhabited by synths and ancient survivors of the war. Players are able to discover a bit of the characters' pasts through the Pre-War introduction, while also learning about the characters after the bombs drop. Sadly, players will need to learn about one character posthumously.

10 Conceived Shaun In A Park

It would be worth mentioning a fact that applies to both versions of the Sole Survivor. By talking to Nora in the introduction, it is revealed Shaun was conceived during an outing at a park. The quote mentions how Nora does not want to go on another picnic, as she jokes the same outcome may happen.

As known, Shaun went on to be kidnapped from Vault 111 and became the leader of The Institute. If neither parent went to the park that day, they might have stayed frozen and woken up normally - just without a child.

9 Nate's Great-Great-Grandfather Fought In World War II

Nate's great-great-grandfather can be seen in the introduction for Fallout 4, when Nate mentions how the ancestor fought in World War II. While it isn't known where the ancestor fought during the war, it is known he left behind a pregnant wife, who gave birth while he was away.

Perhaps Nate's family has a history in the U.S. military, or maybe Nate's ancestor was drafted into the war. It is mentioned the ancestor finally got to go home to his family after the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan.

8 Nora Was A Lawyer

In the Pre-War home of Nate and Nora, a diploma can be found. It is located near the entrance on a shelf, showing Nora also had a potential job. It shows Nora had graduated from Suffolk County School of Law.

If playing as a male Sole Survivor, players will be given a holotape from Codsworth. It is from Nora, mentioning how she wants to start her career now that Shaun was born.

7 Nate Was A Soldier

Like his ancestor, Nate was a soldier who served in the Sino-American War. This explains how Nate is skilled with weapons and is able to use power armor. Players are able to learn about his military past during some encounters.

In the Pre-War introduction, Nate's fatigues can be found in a closet. Also when the player finds the USS Constitution, it is revealed Nate was in the 108th Infantry Regiment.

6 Nora Was Supposed To Be A Veteran

Much like her husband, Nora was suppose to be a veteran. This is revealed by audio files that have Nora mention her time in the military. Why these lines were cut are not known.

It could have possibly given a hint at how Nora and Nate met, possibly meeting in the army. It could have also meant Nora was a lawyer in the military instead of being a civilian lawyer.

5 Nate Was Preparing For A Speech

Nate was preparing for an event at the Veteran's Hall in Concord when the bombs fell on Boston. By finding a terminal at the Fraternal Post 115, it is revealed Nate was giving a speech. It is also interesting, as the terminal mentions Nate is a decorated war hero.

Not a lot is known about what Nate did during his time in the war, but he must have done something big. Maybe Nate was being invited because of his close proximity to Concord.

4 Nora Likely Had Weapon Training

Of course it would be annoying to learn about weapons in a game, but there is a good chance Nate had trained her. Because of his veteran status, he could have seen something like an invasion as a possible outcome. Nate could have taught Nora to use different types of weapons.

With the cut content saying Nora was suppose to be a veteran, that would have also explained how she knew how to use the different weapons. Or who knows, maybe she just really liked guns before the war.

3 Nate Got A Vault Spot Because Of His Veteran Status

The beginning of Fallout 4 has a Vault-Tec representative come to the player's home, giving them a spot in Vault 111. What players might not know is that Nate and his family got the spot because he is a veteran of the Sino-American War.

Luckily, the representative came just in time. As soon as the player finishes talking to him, the bombs drop and the family must make their way to the vault.

2 Nora Has Unique Dialogue

When Nora talks to certain characters, she can respond in unique ways the male Sole Survivor cannot. For instance, when Preston Garvey mentions the Minutemen are the good guys, Nora will respond by saying she is not a guy. It is amusing to hear Nora be sarcastic when she is around other characters.

It is also fun Bethesda made it a point to offer differing dialogue depending on which character the player chooses to play as. Maybe it is Nora's way to cope with her new life in the Commonwealth.

1 Can Be Convinced They Are A Synth

This also includes both versions of the Sole Survivor. In the Far Harbor DLC, DiMA can ask the player if there is a chance they are a synth. The Sole Survivor has a few options on how to respond, either saying they are 100% human or the Sole Survivor will start to question themselves.

DiMA will ask the Sole Survivor is they remember anything from before the bombs drop, with the Sole Survivor saying they only remember the morning. This can DiMA to say that is a common theme in synths. Of course the player knows this is because this is when the game begins.
