One thing that can't be said about Fallout 4 is that it isn't pretty to look at, even after 7 years of being on the market, but things could always look better, which is why one mod overhauls all the game's textures. With the ambitious Fallout London mod due out soon, fans are by no means done with this long-running post-apocalyptic franchise. It may be world's apart from the original 90s entries these days, but since Bethesda took over, the series has been going strong, for the most part.

The fourth installment is highly regarded, though many would agree that Obsidian Entertainment's New Vegas is the superior Fallout game. However, Fallout 4 continues to draw fans in, with popularity likely to increase once the Xbox Series and PS5 ports launch, with its expansive world, in-depth story, host of characters, base building mechanics, and above all, its attractive visuals. But of course, the modding community will always make attempts to keep games looking as good as they can.

That's where Nexus Mods user Painstaking Rick comes into the picture. As spotted by DSO Gaming, this user has released a graphical mod for Fallout 4 called "Performout" that is "intended for powerful computers." The reason for this is that it boosts over 40,000 of the game's textures to 4K. The creator claims that this modification optimizes the whole game, whereas others will only optimize a few parts. As some may suspect, the file size is quite hefty and is actually split into three parts, totaling over 41 GB worth of content. Images on the mod page show the difference between a number of scenes, with finer details presented in the upgraded textures.

While the base game itself is substantial enough, featuring a wealth of locations and missions, there have been plenty of interesting Fallout 4 mods that have come about over the years. Everything from visual tweaks to bug fixes to brand-new stories and NPCs have given players a lot more to do and see in this nuclear-annihilated version of Boston, and there will almost certainly be many more modifications that will come about.

Now that Fallout 5 has been confirmed, though it's not yet in active development so is years away from release, fans can look forward to what Bethesda has in store for its non-Elder Scrolls series. There's no way to know yet what people can expect in the next entry, but hopefully the developer can continue to make post-apocalyptic role-playing a fun activity.

Fallout 4 is available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. A PS5 and Xbox Series X/S port is due in 2023.
