Highlights

  • VATS in Fallout 3 is a game changer, allowing players to target specific enemy body parts for strategic attacks.
  • Unarmed combat in Fallout 3 can be surprisingly effective, with perks like Iron Fist and Paralyzing Palm enhancing damage.
  • Modders continue to enhance the game, offering new ways for players to experience the Capital Wasteland and its challenges.

A Fallout 3 player clipped a hilarious moment in which their VATS cutscene resembled an anime battle. Players often use the VATS system to defeat their enemies in Fallout 3, and this VATS highlight may be among the most memorable.

With the initial Fallout titles being isometric RPGs, they're void of the VATS system despite featuring Action Points. Fallout 3 introduced the VATS mechanic which has become a staple of the franchise, with it being included with each game since. VATS stands for Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, and it helps players accurately attack hostile enemies and select specific parts of the body to target. This targeting system can be used with any weapon, or even when a player is unarmed. One fan has shared an impressive Unarmed Fallout 3 VATS kill which resembles something straight out of an anime.

Which given this is a game all about bleak survival and shelter building, accidentally sabotaging your own work can have dire consequences.

Reddit user MuddaError37 recently shared a Fallout 3 clip in which they're battling a Super Mutant. The clip begins with the Super Mutant reloading its gun as the player activates VATS and uses all of their Action Points to attack the creature four times. Their character then strikes the Fallout Super Mutant on the head with their Brass Knuckles and then uppercuts its shoulder, seemingly having little effect. Their third attack hits the Super Mutants right arm directly, crippling its limb in the process. The camera quickly moves behind the Super Mutant with the player suddenly crouching behind it. With their final attack, the player finishes the Super Mutant off with a punch to its backside, sending the enemy flying.

How Is This Unarmed Character So Powerful?

While many Fallout 3 players opt to use the arsenal of weapons that can be found around the Capital Wasteland, this clip showcases the entertainment value of being unarmed. Although the unarmed player seemed to be disadvantaged against a Super Mutant with a gun, their rapid strikes lowered its health quickly. Like other Fallout titles, Fallout 3 offers a formidable Unarmed path for players to take if they choose not to use melee or ranged weapons. The Iron Fist perk improves unarmed damage, while Paralyzing Palm increases the chances of disabling limbs, and Ninja makes sneak attacks stronger. Given the Super Mutants crippled arm, this player likely has Paralyzing Palm, while the Intense Training perk may have played a role in their above-average Action Points.

There are many paths that players can take, whether it's how they traverse the Fallout 3 Capital Wasteland or what their character specializes in. Though Bethesda has finished adding to the game, many modders still contribute to the ever-evolving game. As some revolve around the Unarmed skill, this combat can be made even more action-packed.
