The Premise

100 Girlfriends Hakari and Karane blushing

Rentaro Aijo is a man who lives for love. Unfortunately, this does not translate to success, as he has been rejected by every girl he has confessed to, with a crowning total of 100 failed confessions. With high school looming on the horizon, Rentaro prays at a shrine that he'll be able to find a girlfriend there. As he prays, the God of Love suddenly appears and tells him that the reason Rentaro has never managed to get a girlfriend until now was because of a clerical error: though every person is only supposed to have one soulmate in their entire lifetime, Rentaro was given 100.

Immediately as he starts high school, Rentaro runs into the first two of his 100 soulmates: his classmates Hakari Hanazono and Karane Inda. The two girls immediately confess to Rentaro, and Rentaro likes them so much he cannot choose between them. He asks the God of Love for help, but only learns a harsh truth: if he does not return the feelings of one of his soulmates, they will inevitably die. Not willing to let even one of his soulmates face such a fate, he asks Hakari and Karane to date him at the same time, planning on doing the same for the rest of his 100 soulmates.

A Zany, Off The Walls Romantic Comedy

100 Girlfriends God at Shrine

What likely stands out to most people from this series' premise is the ridiculousness of it all. The 100 Girlfriends does not shy away from that, resulting in a highly comedic series that even lampoons its own premise. Humor abounds from the first episode as nearly every normal romantic situation is made bizarre just by the inclusion of Rentaro and his growing group of girlfriends. The comedy is absolutely the strongest point of The 100 Girlfriends, and potential viewers should prepare to keep their sides from splitting.

Anime fans looking for romance in this series might be upset at how comedy-focused this series really is, though there are certainly moments of romance throughout the series. Though the premise is ridiculous, there is real love between Rentaro and his many girlfriends, and though the sheer volume of it all can make it feel ridiculous at points, those looking for the more wholesome and heartwarming aspects of romance will still find it here.

A Varied Assortment Of Heroines

100 Girlfriends heroines

100 girlfriends is far from an exaggeration or an overstatement: the series seriously intends on eventually introducing 100 different soulmates for Rentaro, and the manga has already made quite some headway on that number. Of course, the anime is unlikely to include all of these girls at once, but there will still be quite a number of beautiful girls joining Rentaro's "family" of girlfriends.

It sounds great to have that many girlfriends, but it would be honestly boring if they all had similar personalities. Thankfully, The 100 Girlfriends makes sure to give every single one of Rentaro's soulmates an incredibly quirky and unique personality, as well as a vibrant character design that makes them stand out from all the others. Hakari Hanazono, for example, comes from a wealthy family and has a penchant for perverted fantasies. Meanwhile, Karane Inda is a slender tsundere with an unusual level of strength. Of course, though each girl has sides of her that set her apart from the others, they all share one thing in common: being in love with Rentaro Aijo, who does his level best to match their affections with everything he's got.
