Highlights

  • The Wizard Saints in Fairy Tail are mages with unparalleled power and magic capabilities, equivalent to the power needed to wipe out entire nations.
  • The Four Gods of Ishgar, the strongest four Wizard Saints, possess power that goes beyond imagination, with God Serena being the strongest of them all.
  • Makarov, the Guild Master of Fairy Tail, is not only the strongest mage in the guild but also one of the strongest mages in the entire continent.

Fairy Tail offers an extensive line of exceptional mages, with most being affiliated to the Fairy Tail guild. Yet fans remain unaware of the unfettered power that spreads far and wide over the continent of Ishgar, as many capable wizards have been revealed throughout the series that far exceed the limits of normal magic. Those that possess such unfathomable power have been deemed as the ‘Wizard Saint,' showcasing their status and power that stands out among even the strongest of mages.

While the collective name sets these wizards on a level of their own, there are distinctions even under this title, as the Wizard Saints are ranked from one to ten based on their power and magic capabilities, with one being the strongest and ten being the weakest out of them. The difference in their strengths, however, is unimaginable as the strongest four Wizard Saints are not even considered human, and are deemed as the ‘Four Gods of Ishgar’. While the identities of all ten Wizard Saints still remains incomplete, the series has revealed much about these all-powerful mages.

The Wizard Saints of Ishgar

Fairy Tail Ten Wizard Saints

Due to their sheer strength and magic prowess, the Wizard Saints are renowned throughout the continent of Ishgar. Attaining such a revered title is no simple feat as the strength possessed by these wizards is equivalent to the power needed to wipe out entire nations. It is said that their power is so great that if two Wizard Saints were to go head on against each other, it would simply result in a cataclysm – precisely why Ultear intervened in the fight between Jura Neekis and Jellal Fernandes during the Grand Magic Games.

The title of Wizard Saint is granted by the Magic Council’s Chairman, and is determined by the magic power possessed by the mage in question. Some Wizard Saints are members of the Magic Council, such as Draculos Hyberion, while others are S-class wizards and Guild Masters of their guilds, such as Jura and Makarov respectively. Apart from the Four Gods of Ishgar, the rest of the Wizard Saints are more or less equal in power, yet even then, a notable difference can be seen in their strength, seeing how Makarov was able to defeat a fellow Wizard Saint, Jose Porla, with relative ease.

The Four Gods of Ishgar

God Serena and the Other Saints

Being classified under the same name as the rest of the Wizard Saints is an injustice to these four mages, as their power is far beyond imagination. As such, the strongest four Saints unofficially boast another title – the Four Gods of Ishgar, reflecting their true standing among the magic world. However, only little is revealed about these four mages, and their appearances in Fairy Tail are quite limited.

The weakest out of the Four Gods of Ishgar is Warrod Sequen, the fourth Wizard Saint and one of the founding members of Fairy Tail. Although his true strength has never been revealed, he possesses green magic, capable of giving birth to nature and controlling it. Wolfheim is the another one of the Four Gods, and the third-strongest Wizard Saint, who wields beast transformation magic.

Draculos Hyberion is the second-strongest Wizard Saint and the chairman of the Magic Council. His vampire magic is capable of paralyzing his enemies with just a flick of his finger in their direction, earning him the esteemed title of a Wizard Saint. Lastly, the strongest of the Four Gods of Ishgar is God Serena, the former strongest Wizard Saint who then defected to the Alvarez Empire. Boasting a total of eight different Dragon Slayer Magic, he unarguably became the strongest wizard in all of Ishgar.

Jose Porla

Jose Porla from Phantom Lord

Jose Porla is one of the former Wizard Saints, yet his exact position among them remains unknown. Being the Guild Master of Phantom Lord, Jose possessed immense power, and his power was almost equal to that of Makarov. However, he was later on defeated by Makarov’s Fairy Law spell, completely incapacitating him, which also lead to his status of being a Wizard Saint being withdrawn.

Still, his strength is undeniable as he was able to amass an extremely powerful guild that could rival the likes of Fairy Tail. His loss against Makarov is largely due to the corruption in his heart, since his skills and powers rivaled his opponent. Nevertheless, his place as the weakest of the Wizard Saints is justified by his mortifying defeat.

Jura Neekis

Jura Neekis Wizard Saint

Jura holds the position of being the fifth Wizard Saint, a title he earned after undergoing rigorous training. Being an S-class wizard of the Lamia Scale guild, Jura’s power has been witnessed multiple times throughout the series, most notably against the Oración Seis. However, Jura considers himself quite weak compared to the rest of the Wizard Saints, while Makarov has stated that his power can rival that of Gildarts, one of Fairy Tail’s S-class mages.

While Jura's powers are surely capable of unimaginable feats, the series has done him injustice time and again. In the alliance against Oracion Seis, Jura's role was minimal in the dark guild's defeat. His opponent, Hoteyes, was forced to turn good due to Nirvana's powers, removing any chance for Jura to showcase his powers. During the Grand Magic Games, Jura lost to Laxus Drayer, an artificual Dragon Slayer whose lightning should have been subdued by Jura's Earth Magic. Overall, Fairy Tail failed to portray Jura's true potential.

Makarov Drayer

Makarov Drayer Wizard Saint

It comes as no surprise that the Guild Master of Fiore’s strongest guild is also one of the strongest mages in the continent. Makarov’s magic capabilities are no secret as the series has revealed multiple occasions where he has turned the tide of battle in his guild’s favor. Makarov is also the only Wizard Saint to go up against another Saint – an event where he proved his superior powers.

For the majority of the series, Makarov was given the backseat, though this was largely done for the rest of the guild to shine through. However, the few instances where Makarov truly showcases his potential are bound to leave an impact. Despite his old age, Makarov strength remains unrivaled, and the title of Wizard Saint serves as a testament to his unparalleled powers.

Jellal Fernandes

Jellal Fernandes Wizard Saint

Before betraying the Magic Council, Jellal used to hold the title of being one of the Ten Wizard Saints, albeit under the name of Siegrain. Jellal’s Heavenly Body Magic has been revealed to be one of the strongest in the series, as he is capable of raining down stars on his enemies. Jellal’s unfathomable power has been witnessed from time to time throughout the series as he serves as a major plot device in several of Fairy Tail’s arcs, representing not just his immense power but also his significance in the series.

Jellal's power as a Wizard Saint is still questionable as Natsu was able to subdue him to some extent during the Tower of Heaven arc. The only time he was about to showcase his true powers was his fight against Jura during the Grand Magic Games, albeit under the guise of Mystogan. Before he could reveal his Heavenly Body Magic, Ultear and Meredy intervened and sabotaged the fight, leaving fans devoid of ever witnessing the extent of Jellal's true power.

Fairy Tail is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
