During the recent Nintendo Direct, Koei Tecmo announced Fairy Tail 2, a direct sequel to the turn-based Fairy Tail RPG from 2020. However, Fairy Tail 2 has ditched the turn-based mechanics and has become an action-RPG akin to the mobile game Fairy Tail: Fierce Fight.

Fairy Tail is a highly renowned shounen manga. The series has ventured into the gaming industry before, but many of its games remained confined to Japan. That changed in 2020 when Koei Tecmo and Gust released the turn-based Fairy Tail RPG for Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. The first game adapted a significant portion of the series' final arcs, such as Tenrou Island, Grand Magic Games, Tartaros, and Avatar, while also introducing new elements never seen in the manga and created by the series' author, Hiro Mashima.

Here are some of the interesting things that you can expect from the upcoming iteration of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest.

Fairy Tail 2 will continue where the first game left off but will introduce some gameplay changes. In terms of story, Fairy Tail 2 will adapt the Alvarez arc, the seventeenth and final story saga. Fans will face antagonists like Zeref, the black dragon Acnologia, as well as all members of the Spriggan 12. Fairy Tail 2 underwent a significant gameplay change, as it swaps turn-based battles for real-time action-RPG mechanics. The trailer shows players won't be confined to using Natsu and Lucy all the time and can now assemble a party with various mages from the Fairy Tail guild.

One of the combat highlights was the demonstration of Link Attacks. Party members can use their spells together to unleash sequential attacks, unleashing new effects. In the Fairy Tail 2 trailer, Laxus performs a Link Attack with Mirajane, where the electric mage's magic has a paralysis effect, while Mirajane generates a speed-up buff. Another flashy combination shown in the video is between the battle-wizard Erza Scarlet and Wendy, the Sky Dragon Slayer Magic user.

Fairy Tail 2 retells the last arc of the original manga, which concluded in 2017. In 2018, the creator Hiro Mashima released a sequel titled Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, which is ongoing. For now, it's unclear if Fairy Tail 2 will add new scenes or storylines or even introduce unseen content like the first Fairy Tail game did, such as new spells for Unison Raids, which are fusions of two distinct magics to form an entirely new one.

Fairy Tail 2 will be released this winter for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and PC via Steam, suggesting it might come out by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Fans can eagerly await more updates from Koei Tecmo throughout the year.
