Highlights

  • Fable has a history of experimenting with crossovers, such as including unique weapons and armor from other games in limited editions.
  • The new Fable should carefully choose collaborations to maintain its unique look, feel, and tone, with Halo being a potential choice.
  • Crossovers with past Fable games could include referencing fan-favorite characters and adding a layer of intrigue to the game's world.

Fable might not be the first franchise that comes to mind when one thinks of crossovers in games. In the modern landscape where crossovers have become so commonplace, games like Fortnite, Call of Duty Warzone, Mortal Kombat, and previously Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are typically talked about. However, Fable actually has a brief history of experimenting with crossover in its games. With Playground Games' new Fable on the horizon, it opens up the possibility of the franchise continuing this experimentation. Though it could potentially have some merits, crossovers in Fable must tread carefully to avoid losing itself.

There was a moment in time when crossovers in Fable were a highly sought-after, exclusive commodity. When the Fable 2 Limited Collector's Edition was released, it included unique weapons and armor that could only be found in that edition. These items were the most notable crossovers in Fable's history. They included Hal's Armor, which was a very Fable version of Master Chief's armor from Halo, Hal's Sword, a fantasy version of an elite plasma sword, and Hal's Rifle, which is based on the Halo assault rifle. If the new Fable was to take notes from the series' past, it could potentially provide some interesting crossovers.

How Crossovers Can Work In Fable

Fable Crossovers With Xbox Games

The new Fable will have to be smart with its choice of collaborations to avoid losing the unique look, feel, and tone of the Fable world. In Fable 2, this was handled very well by adapting the art style of the Halo items to fit into Fable's aesthetic. This could certainly continue in the future with more Halo crossovers. As Halo and the Master Chief are the enduring poster child of Xbox, it makes sense they would be the first choice to return to the new Fable. Even the same or a similar version of Hal's armor from Fable 2 would be cool to see.

Since Fable 2, Xbox has grown exponentially to include some of the most iconic game franchises in history. With so many characters and content under one roof, there is a seemingly endless source of crossover potential. Some interesting Xbox franchise crossovers could be:

  • Sea of Thieves
  • Doom
  • Fallout
  • The Elder Scrolls
  • Diablo
  • Warcraft
  • Gears of War

Items such as character outfits, weapons, and exclusive items taken from these and other franchises could be a cool way to promote other games while providing some fun content for fans.

Crossovers With Past Fable Games

The new Fable will have to be mindful not to oversaturate the world with items and imagery from other games, as this could potentially take away from the richness of the Fable universe. A good way to include fun unlockables or exclusive gear that has a bit of nostalgia behind it would be to include armor/weapons from previous Fable games. This could also be a unique opportunity to reference fan-favorite characters who may not have the chance to fully return to a game. Some good characters to pull from would be:

  • Jack of Blades
  • Theresa
  • Reaver
  • Garth
  • Hammer

Including references to older characters could also help make the new Fable world feel familiar to players, as it may be very different from the Albion of past games. Though there is still not much information about the world of Fable 4, it could potentially be set in a different continuity from previous games, which could make references to older characters feel a bit mysterious and add a layer of intrigue to the game. Whatever route the new Fable takes, it will be interesting to see if and how crossovers are used to add to the experience.
