Everything Everywhere All at Once wants fans to travel to 1975 when the Pet Rock became the hottest toy on the market. A24 added these googly-eyed fellas to its online store, with the rocks quickly running out of stock ahead of this year’s Oscars.
A24 saw Everything Everywhere All at Once become one of 2022's most critically acclaimed movies and reach the number spot as the studio’s biggest commercial hit worldwide, earning just over $104 million on a modest budget. However, awards season has turned this sci-fi action gem into the talk of the town in Hollywood, reviving Ke Huy Quan's career and turning Michelle Yeoh and the film itself into genuine Oscar contenders.
Few would have expected to see Stephanie Hsu and Yeoh's silent roles as pet rocks get equal attention. However, A24 has turned these iconic props from Everything Everywhere into desirable merchandise, with each Pet Rock retailing for $35. Like the original product, these come in a special cardboard box with scenery from the film and A24's logo printed on it. However, the item’s description explains, “Rock size may vary,” and it’s not promised to change by reading the included training pamphlet.
It’s not as if this is the only Everything Everywhere All at Once collectible available on A24's online store. The studio also took a couple more notable items from the movie, namely Deirdre's oddly shaped Auditor of the Month trophy and a pair of latex Hot Dog Finger Gloves, retailing each for $60 and $36, respectively. Unlike the Pet Rocks, those two are currently in stock, but considering the extra buzz surrounding the film and its 11 Oscar nominations, A24 could find a few more rocks to sell.
Everything Everywhere pet rocks are expected to ship by February 10, meaning lucky buyers will probably receive their odd little toys around the eve of the Oscars or shortly after the ceremony. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Pet Rocks' scenes act as an intermission to Evelyn and Waymond's multiverse travel. Despite their dialogue being limited to text, they’re used to portray some of the movie’s more emotional mother-and-daughter moments.
2023 will be far from A24's first big night at the Oscars, as the likes of Ex Machina, Ladybird, and Moonlight's Best Picture win have landed the studio plenty of praise for its bets. However, Daniels' ability to express their creativity in Everything Everywhere All at Once could turn it into the crown jewel in just a few weeks.
