New Knives Out 2 set photos revealed that Ethan Hawke was secretly cast for a mystery role. The highly-anticipated sequel started production in Greece earlier this week with an all-star cast.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Knives Out 2 will see Daniel Craig reprise his role as Detective Benoit Blanc. The loaded ensemble cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and Jada Pinkett Smith, the last of whom was also confirmed by set photos. Following the release of the original, Netflix dished out more than $450 million for the rights to Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3, though Johnson reportedly retains a great degree of creative control.

Recent set photos from the Daily Mail confirmed that Oscar nominee Hawke was secretly cast in the Knives Out sequel. The photos show a pony-tailed Hawke pointing what appears to be a water gun at Bautista. At this time, it is unclear who the actor is playing and how significant his role will be. While specific plot details have been kept under wraps, Johnson has previously stated that the film is not a follow-up to the original film's story and that Craig is the only character from the first installment who will be featured in the upcoming blockbuster.

2019’s Knives Out saw Craig’s Blanc investigate the murder of Christopher Plummer’s Harlan Thrombey. The film concluded with Harlan's nurse Marta (Ana de Armas) tricking Hugh Ransom Drysdale (Chris Evans) into confessing that he murdered Fran (Edit Patterson). Knives Out was a massive success, grossing $311 million worldwide, and received a Best Original Screenplay nomination at the 92nd Academy Awards. Critics and fans praised the film for its fresh take on the traditional murder-mystery genre.

Hawke, who was last seen in The Good Lord Bird, is also filming Marvel Studios' Moon Knight. The six-episode first season is being developed by The Umbrella Academy writer Jeremy Slater and is slated to premiere on Disney Plus in 2022. Egyptian screenwriter Mohamed Diab was tapped to direct the Phase Four Marvel series. Created by Doug Moench, the dark superhero first appeared in 1975's Werewolf by Night.

Moon Knight tells the story of Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac), a soldier who fled to the United States from Czechoslovakia during World War II. He becomes the god of the moon after surviving a near-fatal experience in an Egyptian tomb. Moon Knight is one of several new Marvel shows that will drop on Disney Plus.

Knives Out can be currently streamed on Netflix.
