The Epic Games Store is finally fulfilling one of its users' most dire wishes and is beginning to add mod support to its games. At the moment, the initiative is still in its beta phase and only one game is making use of it, but Epic Games promises that there will be more to come in the near future.
As the Epic Games Store attempts to find its footing and gain users, its lack of mod support has been one of the major things driving people away from it. Established and more popular platforms like Steam already had that sort of thing figured out, but now the Epic Games Store is finally adding mod support.
As mentioned previously, only one game supports mods so far, that being MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, but more should come soon. It's unclear exactly what this mod support entails, but interested users should go try it out on MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.
Since this is an early beta form, modding will likely be limited or at the very least difficult with the current systems in place. That said, the more people that use it and provide feedback, the more likely it is to improve over time. The Epic Games Store does say that fans can expect to see more supported titles in the future, so for those that don't think MechWarrior 5 is their style, there should be other options soon. It's just a matter of how quick other titles will be to opt into this service and how much fans enjoy what is currently available.
Regardless of all that, this is certainly a huge step for the Epic Games Store, as it will put it on the map with other PC game stores once it is fully implemented. Modding is one of the biggest things that separates PC gaming from console gaming, and when given the choice between buying a game on a platform with mods or one without it, the choice is usually pretty clear. This is especially true when the prices are the same or comparable, which one of many reasons why most of the Epic Games Store's users have joined in order to get free games.
It will be interesting to see how mod support progresses on the Epic Games Store, as there isn't much information about it at the moment. Hopefully, Epic Games will come forward soon with an announcement of its intentions, but until then fans seem generally excited about the addition.
