The Epic Games Store has revealed the latest free game for its ongoing holiday giveaway calendar. Those who don't already have the game in their Epic Games Store library should consider claiming it quickly, since a new giveaway will take its place starting tomorrow morning at 8 AM (PST).

Epic is giving away free games throughout the holiday season at the rate of one per day over a period of two weeks. The generous giveaway schedule has become an annual tradition, and in past years has included some major titles from recognized publishers such as Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive, and Warner Bros. Interested gamers must return to the store daily if they hope to claim everything, since individual titles are offered during strict 24-hour windows. Yesterday, the Epic Games Store offered Them's Fightin' Herds for free.

Today's new giveaway is for Wolfenstein: The New Order, which was developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks. First released in May 2014, the title is the follow-up to Raven Software's 2009 Wolfenstein reboot. It enjoyed a more favorable critical response than its predecessor, and was quickly followed by several more titles. Its high quality sequel prompted some to debate whether Wolfenstein: The New Order or Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is the better FPS game, which is a nice problem to have from a game publisher's perspective.

This is not the first time Epic Games has given away a copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order. It is generally considered one of the best free Epic Games Store games offered in 2022, thanks to a prior release in early June (when it was available for one week). Given the number of free games given away at the Epic Games Store, a few repeats are perhaps inevitable.

The list of every free game on the Epic Games Store to date is impressively lengthy and typically grows on a weekly basis. Free game giveaways are a nice way for Epic to develop customer loyalty among possible future consumers as they build a library of games they enjoy playing and develop the habit of heading to the Epic Games Store first for gaming entertainment. It's an approach Epic Games is betting will allow it to build a devoted following that might make headway against Valve's popular Steam store, which for years maintained a stranglehold on the digital PC games marketplace despite competition from the likes of Electronic Arts and Ubisoft. Some consumers have built up a library of hundreds of games without even providing their credit card details to Epic Games, but they might yet convert to paying customers down the line. After all, the next free game is always just around the corner.
