Highlights

  • The Epic Games Store's weekly free game promotions are effective advertisements for the games and the storefront itself, showing no signs of stopping.
  • The number of games offered for free each week has recently decreased to only one, but players may not be upset as the next free game is a remake of the popular title Cave Story .
  • Cave Story+ is a Metroidvania game with dynamic storytelling and aesthetics similar to Undertale, making it a must-try game that shouldn't be overlooked.

The Epic Games Store and its weekly free game promotions serve as great advertisements for the titles offered as well as the storefront itself. For the last five years, every other week has seen one or two games being offered at no extra cost to Epic Games Store users, and this promotion doesn't show any sign of stopping anytime soon. Ahead of Homeworld 3's release, for instance, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is currently available for free on the site.

However, near the end of August, the number of games offered up every week on the Epic Games Store took a new direction. Instead of two games being offered, Deserts of Kharak started a trend of only one title being free, and the game for August 31 is continuing this trend. However, players may not be too upset with the lack of choices in Epic Games' freebies, as the next free game is a remake of an iconic title, Cave Story+.

Epic Games Store Free Game For August 31 is the Best Game You Already Know

The Epic Games Store free game for August 31 is a Metroidvania that takes players around seven and a half hours to beat that takes advantage of players not knowing a lot about it. This puts players on an even playing field with Quote, a robot who wakes up in the depths of a cavern with no memories whatsoever. Through Quote's eyes, players learn about the world around the robot, making friends and difficult choices that change the game's ending and even certain characters' lives. Fans of Undertale would feel very at home with the aesthetics and dynamic storytelling in Cave Story as a result.

Toby Fox's Undertale has more similarities to Cave Story+ than gamers might expect at first, and one of these similarities certainly comes from the reception of both titles. Both are incredibly popular indie games that broke past the expectations for one-man developer titles. Because of Cave Story's popularity, it's highly likely that some Epic Games Store users have actually heard about the game, or even Quote himself, through browsing the internet.

Depending on what exactly players have heard or discovered about Cave Story+ online, thankfully the proper spoiler-based discussions of the game have faded into obscurity with time. This makes it rather likely that the true heart and theme of discovery of the game will still hold true to those who pick it up for the first time on Epic Games' digital storefront. As a result, this makes Cave Story+ an incredible offer that players shouldn't sleep on.

After all, this isn't the first time Cave Story+ has been offered to players for free. It was also part of Epic Games' free games promotion back in 2020. On top of that, Cave Story+ being offered at no extra cost stays true to the title's roots in a way that many players might not expect as the original Cave Story got its start as a game fans could already download for free online. Cave Story+, however, comes with additional features on top of being a complete remake.

In the end, there are more reasons than not to justify why players should take advantage of the Epic Game Store's offer for August 31 to try something that could reward them in the end with an unforgettable experience that many players before them have remembered for years. However, if players are intimidated by the Metroidvania genre, known for being rather challenging in its own right, then they can simply wait until the Epic Games Store reveals the next free game once Cave Story+ is up for grabs.
