Highlights

  • Epic Games Store's weekly tradition of offering free games keeps fans coming back for more, serving as a great advertisement for the platform.
  • Loop Hero and Bloons TD 6, available starting August 3, offer different types of action, catering to different player interests, with Bloons TD 6 featuring casual, accessible strategy gameplay and Loop Hero being favorably reviewed and nominated for awards.
  • Both games notably involve an isometric perspective and strategic placement of resources, despite being in very different genres.

Once again, as part of the storefront's weekly tradition, two new Epic Games Store free games have been revealed as the last two have been made available for players to grab between now and August 3. While it may baffle some players that Epic Games have managed to keep the promotion going for so long, it serves the platform well as it keeps fans coming back for more offerings, because no matter what's available, a free game is the best chance to try something new. It serves as a great advertisement for the Epic Games Store as people may sign up just to snag what's being offered.

From now until August 3, fans can snag Homeworld: Remastered Collection and Severed Steel, two games that hone-in on the science fiction genre of media and offer two different types of action depending on what players prefer. Once August 3 comes around, though, players will be able to grab Loop Hero and Bloons TD 6 at no extra cost, which once again offer similar types of action, but with a different vibe depending on what fans are in the mood for.

What Loop Hero and Bloons TD 6 Have in Common

On the surface, Bloons TD 6 and Loop Hero seem like drastically different games. One deals with cartoony monkeys, and the other deals with repairing the world after it nearly ends. However, they're more similar than fans might expect. Both titles deal with controlling the game from an isometric perspective, placing items in strategic ways in order to win the fight at the end of the specific map players are on. Despite being in two separate genres, both free Epic Games Store games almost meet in the middle as zero-player games in this sense.

In this regard, August 3's games aren't that much different to the Epic Games Store offerings for July 27, as both sets offer different types of action to suit different players' interests. For those who want a challenging strategy game with an intriguing story to uncover, Loop Hero is a steal that fans shouldn't miss. On the other hand, if players are looking for something more casual, then the tower-defense action of Bloons TD 6 might be what they're looking for.

However, players should know that Bloons TD 6 still offers a fair bit of microtranscations in it despite being a premium game, which it has been criticized for. On the other hand, Bloons TD 6 may be a good offering for the week as Baldur's Gate 3 also comes out August 3 for PC players, meaning that fans will likely be too invested in the latest RPG release to play Loop Hero, a rogue-lite take on the genre that requires almost just as much thought. It's possible that players actively enjoying Baldur's Gate 3 together could take a break from the content in that game with Bloons TD 6's co-op mode with ease for no extra charge on the Epic Games storefront.

At the same time, Loop Hero being offered for free isn't a deal that players should sleep on, either. Loop Hero has been generally favored with critics and has been nominated for a number of awards, including for Best Indie Game at The Game Awards in 2021. It's quite literally endlessly repayable, since after fans beat its procedurally generated loop maps, they're given the option to play the entire game over as in what's described as "another world." While Loop Hero will likely require more thought than the monkey game, RPG fans most certainly shouldn't sleep on it.

No matter which of the two titles players pick up, or if they help themselves to both, they'll certainly have plenty to keep track of on both screens. If fans have never played games like Bloons TD 6 or Loop Hero before, then they may just find out they enjoy isometric games. Whether making sure their monkeys defeat the balloons, or by helping rebuild a dying world one card at a time, players are sure to have fun with these Epic Games Store freebies.
