The Elder Scrolls Online has received a cinematic trailer for its upcoming expansion Necrom, ushering players back to Morrowind. The Chapter will introduce a new class into The Elder Scrolls Online, as well as see the return of a Daedric Prince last encountered during DLC for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
A recent Xbox Developer Direct announced The Elder Scrolls Online's next Chapter with a brief cinematic teaser, shortly followed up by confirmation that the Arcanist would become the third class added to the MMO since launch. ZeniMax Online Studios confirmed late last year that it intended to transition away from the current annual content cycle and return to complete Chapters - Necrom is the first step in this direction. Furthermore, it has been stated that ZeniMax aims to develop existing areas of the game and that future DLC will likely be inspired by this change in philosophy.
That brief teaser during the Developer Direct has now been fleshed out into a complete cinematic trailer, titled The Elder Scrolls Online: Shadow Over Morrowind. A dozen seconds in and an elven Arcanist takes the stage, bursts of green-colored magic projecting out of her palm. Offered a glimpse at what is seemingly the Arcanist's healing spell, the environment transitions to a procession of hooded figures, whom the elven woman attempts to evade. Eventually cornered, even conjured tendrils are insufficient to keep enemies at bay but, before a killing blow is dealt, the Arcanist sinks into the dimension of a well-known Daedric Prince.
The trailer concludes with a wide shot of Hermaeus Mora, the Prince of knowledge and memory, an entity neither good nor evil. The Demon of Knowledge was last featured in Skyrim's Dragonborn DLC, implicitly aiding the player in defeating the rogue Dragonborn Miraak through the use of his Black Books. Some of the promotional material for Necrom has included locations that seem identical to the twisted architecture of Apocrypha found in Skyrim's additional content, suggesting that players will venture into Mora's realm.
ZeniMax Online Studios has also offered an overview of the Arcanist class, a highly requested addition to the MMO. Apocryphal Gate is an ability that enables instantaneous traversal across portals, opening up opportunities for skillful movement and innovative traversal, whereas Abyssal Impact sees players channeling their inner Micolash from Bloodborne, thrusting forward with tentacular limbs. It remains to be seen how well the community will respond to news of the Arcanist, as many had hoped for current classes to be given new skills and weapons to play with. With how poorly the recent Firesong DLC was received, The Elder Scrolls Online needs an unquestionable win.
