Elden Ring takes the familiar gameplay and difficulty of the Souls series of and perfectly adapts it to a massive open world. Moving away from the more linear gameplay elements, Elden Ring allows players to go where they want and discover rewards that can aid in difficult sections - but that doesn't mean everything is different.

One key item in Elden Ring that harkens back to other Souls games is Deathroot. This rare item functions in a similar way to Covenants, where players offer specific items for rewards. To find the NPC who wants players to hand over Deathroot, one must first be acquired, or a questline tied to the Key Item won't progress.

Updated July 31, 2022 by Erik Petrovich: To hand over Deathroot Elden Ring has players visit a unique NPC in a faraway, dangerous location. This place can only be accessed by teleportation, the sending gate for which is revealed by an NPC in Roundtable Hold. With Deathroot Elden Ring players can earn a variety of unique and powerful rewards, including Incantations like Beast Claw and even an end-game Smithing Stone. If you are wondering what to do with Deathroot, look no further than this guide on where to find the item, how many Deathroot to hand over there are, and what rewards one can expect from trading them.

Where to Find Deathroot

While adventuring through the Lands Between, players can typically find Deathroot at the end of certain catacombs or as a drop from Tibia Mariner world bosses. While the game doesn't explicitly state it, these items are important as they can be "traded" for diverse and powerful rewards.

The first two Deathroot players typically find are in a chest at the end of the Deathtouched Catacombsor after beating the Tibia Mariner in Summonwater Village. The Deathtouched Catacombs are located west above the Saintbridge in north Limgrave, while Summonwater Village is just a short ride east from the Saintsbridge.

Three more Deathroot are dropped by Tibia Mariners in the Wyndham Ruins, north of the Liurnia Highway Grace, and on a cliff by Castle Sol. The final four can be found in chests after beating the bosses of the Black Knife Catacombs, Gelmir Hero's Grave, Giant's Mountaintop Catacombs, and the secret area beneath the Hidden Path to the Haligtree.

Players can hand over Deathroot to a being named Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman. Players can find this NPC at the Bestial Sanctum in the northeast area of the Dragonbarrow. This region can be accessed after speaking to an NPC at Roundtable Hold called D, Hunter of the Dead. You can also meet him outside Summonwater Village before the Tibia Mariner boss.

Smithing Stone

D will inform players of a sending gate that leads to the Beast Clergyman outside of the Third Church of Marika - he should mark the location on your map to make it easier to find, as it's partially hidden from view. When the player gives Deathroot to the Beast Clergyman he rewards them with a variety of Incantations, Seals, and other useful items.

It's worth progressing the questline all the way to the end as the final reward for turning in the ninth Deathroot is an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, one of two Smithing Stones that can't be farmed. However, upon giving the Beast Clergyman his fourth Deathroot, he will turn on the player, turning hostile until they are forced into submission. They don't have to be killed, just hit them a few times and the attacks will cease.

Elden Ring is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
