  • Messmer the Impaler will be a featured boss in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
  • Fans reacted with humor at the player's attempt at replicating a boss design using existing in-game items.

An Elden Ring player ended up with what they called a Walmart version of Messmer the Impaler from the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion after they tried to make a character based on the boss using only gear already available in the base game. Messmer will be encountered in the upcoming DLC's new area, the Land of Shadow.

One of the additional bosses that will be featured in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is Messmer the Impaler, a mysterious red-haired figure that resembles the game's demigods in terms of appearance and stature. With the major expansion coming out soon, an Elden Ring player has attempted to transform their character into Messmer using only items already present in the game, resulting in an imperfect yet admirable recreation of the boss.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Leak Reveals New Screenshots

More leaked screenshots for Elden Ring's highly anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion are circulating among the community.

In a post on the Elden Ring subreddit, user No-Personality-61 shared their custom avatar based on Shadow of the Erdtree's Messmer the Impaler. The level 396 character, fittingly named Walmart Messmer, used armor pieces from the Drake Knight and Rotten Duelist sets, as well as the Inquisitor's Girandole, which is considered to be one of Elden Ring's best spears, to somewhat capture the essence of the upcoming boss' design.

Community members poked fun at No-Personality-61's avatar and its name, with many commenters even providing alternative titles for the custom character such as Thrift Store Messmer and Memer the Impaled. One Reddit user, meanwhile, advised No-Personality-61 to retire Walmart Messmer as the character was close to reaching level 400. It is not uncommon for players to have a level 150 character before making it to any of Elden Ring's multiple endings.

FromSoftware president and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed in a past interview that shadow will be an important element of Messmer's design. The veteran Japanese game developer, who previously claimed that Shadow of the Erdtree will be Elden Ring's only expansion, added that players will discover why the character was never mentioned in the base game's story despite seemingly being an important figure.

Not much else is known about Messmer, but he is always seen using fire magic and wielding a large, imposing spear in marketing materials like the recently released story trailer for Shadow of the Erdtree. He also seems to always be accompanied by a snake, leading some to speculate that he could be related to Praetor Rykard, an optional boss in Elden Ring that players can easily miss. Rykard, who is a demigod like many of Elden Ring's other major bosses, also has snakes as part of his motif.
