There are multiple different ways to play Elden Ring, from pursuing a strength-centric build to using magic exclusively. For those who are drawn to the latter, there some weapons hidden within the Lands Between that allow players to harness immense magical power. One such weapon, buried in the northeastern portion of Elden Ring's map, is the Sword of Night and Flame .

The Sword of Night and Flame is a huge sword that, as the name suggests, takes advantage of flaming attacks. The sword itself has a respectable reach, though perhaps not as good as other weapons in Elden Ring like the Claymore. The sword can conjure beams of magic similar to those created by night sorcery, sweep the area ahead of its wielder with flames, and utilizes both Intelligence and Faith to strengthen its damage.

This guide has been updated with video footage to help you track down the sword and an expanded breakdown of the sword's stat requirements and capabilities.

Where to Find the Sword of Night and Flame in Elden Ring

When searching for the Sword of Night and Flame, players must first head to the lower levels of Caria Manor. Players should fast travel to the Site of Grace and then exit the room. They'll find themselves on the ramparts of the manor, which they should follow and take a left at the earliest opportunity. That passage will end abruptly, but by taking another left and jumping down two rooftops, players will see a ladder that leads into a hidden room. There, they will find the chest that contains the powerful Sword of Night and Flame. Indeed, Elden Ring has dominated gaming since its release, and one of the best weapons to use is the Sword of Night and Flame.

The sword has two magical attacks. It can send a ribbon of flame at enemies and use its "night" ability to send a beam of light at opponents, one which delivers extreme damage. Of course, the sword can't be used by just anyone. It requires 24 Intelligence and Faith in order to be wielded, while also requiring 12 Strength and 12 Dexterity, which means it's best suited to more experienced players/late game or NG+ builds. Unlike weapons like the Scythe in Elden Ring, the Sword of Night and Flame is meant for those who have seriously developed their in-game character and skills.

Considering the scope of Elden Ring, the amount of available weapons in-game can seem overwhelming. The Sword of Night and Flame, however, has the potential to become a regular addition to player arsenals. And, with the power from a strong weapon, players will be able to explore (in full) the result of FromSoftware's beautiful art direction. In fact, it's the amazing world that Elden Ring conjures that keeps players searching for new items and scouring the mystical realm of the Lands Between.

Elden Ring: 10 Best Unique Weapon Skills, Ranked Comet Azur and flame attacks in elden ring

The Sword of Night and Flame is a weapon that requires careful stat investment to utilize well. Meeting the minimum requirements (12 Str, 12 Dex, 24 Int, 24 Faith) to wield it should, as always, be your first priority. If you don't mind two-handing it, you can ignore the Strength requirement with any of the starting classes. That said, one-handing this sword is preferable so that you can use a staff or seal in your other hand.

The Sword's physical damage scales off the wielder's Strength and Dexterity, making these two important if you plan on using the sword's normal attacks. The sword also deals some magic and fire damage with its normal attacks, which scale off the wielder's Intelligence (Magic) and Faith (Fire). That said, its true power comes from the unique weapon skill "Night-and-Flame Stance." This weapon skill allows you to take up a stance before executing one of two special attacks, chosen by pressing either the light attack or heavy attack button. Using a Light Attack while in the stance will launch a "Night Comet" attack (not to be confused with the spell of the same name), blasting a beam of magic in a straight line ahead of the wielder. This attack scales off the wielder's Intelligence Stat exclusively. Using a Heavy Attack while in the stance releases a sweeping flame burst. This attack scales off the wielder's Fath Stat.

Generally speaking, it is best to focus on either Intelligence or Faith initially to amplify the power of either the Night Comet or the Flame Wave. Attempting to split your stats down the middle while leveling up can be tricky and often results in the blade underperforming until high levels. Once you've got a comfortable amount of either Intelligence or Faith you can switch to the other stat and get the other half of the Weapon Skill powered up too.

Since the Sword of Night and Flame benefits the most from Intelligence and Faith, it pairs well with mixed-caster builds. Other items that are useful to such a build are the Prince of Death's Staff (for using Int and Faith to strengthen sorceries) and the Golden Order Seal (for using Int and Faith to strengthen incantations.) Mixing Intelligence and Faith also allows you to use Death and Magma Sorceries, such as Ancient Death Rancor and Rykard's Rancor, along with Fundamentalist Incantations like Triple Rings of Light and Radagon's Ring of Light. Due to the amount of FP used by the Night-and-Flame Stance, it is recommended to invest in the Mind Stat, equip the Carian Filigreed Crest, or both.
