Weapon upgrades are king in Elden Ring. Players tackling FromSoftware’s first open-world adventure will have a hard time without the right gear to fight off the hordes of vicious enemies. Among the strongest weapons in Elden Ring are the boss weapons, usually retrieved by trading in Remembrance at the Roundtable Hold; however, these weapons cannot be upgraded with ordinary Smithing Stones, but instead require Somber Smithing Stones.

Rarer than their ordinary counterparts, finding Somber Smithing Stones can be a challenge in Elden Ring. This guide will help players find where to buy Somber Smithing Stones (3) and (4) to help upgrade the Tarnished’s rarer weapons to +3 and +4.

Where to Buy Them (Liunaria of the Lakes)

The earliest chance to purchase Somber Smithing Stones (3) and (4) is after the player has reached northwest Liurnia of the Lakes. This is accessed after players either defeat Godrick the Grafted in Stormveil Castle, or make their way around the Castle via the cliffs: to do this, simply take a left past the rubble at the collapsed bridge north of Stormhill Shack.

Once in Liurnia, players will want to head directly north, through the marshes, past the Academy of Raya Lucaria and north-northwestto the Kingsrealm Ruins. The Ruins arenorthwest of Sorcerer’s Isle, west-southwest of Bellum Church, and south-southwest of Caria Manor.

At the ruins entrance, deal with any spellcasting Aristocrats and Wolves that block the path, and keep heading north until the Tarnished reaches a large stone archway. Approach it and hit it with a weapon to see an illusory wall vanish to reveal a Site of Grace called ‘The Road to the Manor.'

Just northwest of this site sits the giant Smithing Master Iji. After talking with him, not only will Iji offer his services as a Blacksmith, he will also sell unlimited Somber Smithing Stones (1) and (2), as well as 3 Somber Smithing Stones (3) and (4) for 4000 and 6000 runes respectively.

Where to Buy Them (Altus Plateau)

Later in the game, when Elden Ring's enigmatic Tarnished arrives at Altus Plateau, they can find the Altus Tunnel directly south of the Minor Erdtree and west of the Second Church of Marika. After exploring the tunnels, players will have to defeat the Crystalian, and when they do, they will be rewarded with the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (2).

From here, travel to the Roundtable Hold and follow the left passage to the Twin Maiden Husks, who sell items to the player. Offer them the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (2), and they will be supplied with an unlimited stock of Somber Smithing Stones (3) and (4) for 4000 and 6000 runes, respectively.

Elden Ring is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
