Elden Ring 2 Could Be Bigger and Better, But Doesn't Need to Be

A sequel to Elden Ring has a chance to offer an even bigger map, but the game can succeed without a major increase in scope and scale.

Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC launches on June 21 and gives fans a variety of options when pre-ordering the expansion. The base version costs $40 and includes the DLC plus a bonus gesture called Ring of Miquella. Alternatively, users can pre-order the DLC's $50 Premium Bundle, which includes the previously mentioned items plus a Shadow of the Erdtree digital artbook and soundtrack. Users who are willing to spend a lot more cash can pre-order the $250 Shadow of the Erdtree Collector's Edition, which comes in a stylish box and includes a statue of Messmer the Impaler, 40-page hardcover artbook, and digital soundtrack. However, Bandai Namco emphasized that quantities are limited for the Collector's Edition.

A $100 Deluxe Edition of the same bundle is also available, which adds in the digital artbooks and soundtracks from both the base game and the expansion. The expansion's trailer confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree will introduce new enemies, locations, weapons, and more.

In the expansion, players will be called to the Land of Shadow by Elden Ring's Empyrean Miquella, where they will discover new secrets and meet strange characters. The trailer showcases an assortment of new enemies and unique locations that are reminiscent of the base game's level of detail. Although the Land of Shadow will be a completely new world within Elden Ring, players will be able to seamlessly travel between the two maps.

The highly anticipated DLC follows the massive success of Elden Ring's base version, which won four categories at The Game Awards 2022. Fans are hoping that the expansion will maintain that level of quality, and the trailer certainly seems to support that hope.
