Of all the enemies to return and/or get a variation in Elden Ring'sShadow of the Erdtree DLC, the fact that the Kindred of Rot enemies make a return is nothing short of cruel. These enemies were already so frustrating to deal with in the base game, and now in the DLC, they hit even harder (to be fair, everything in the DLC hits incredibly hard).

Elden Ring: Every Axe, Ranked

The axe is a weapon class in Elden Ring and is known for its ability to dish out some serious damage.

However, thankfully, you can also use their own magic to hit equally hard, using one of the new Incantations found in Shadow of the Erdtree called Pest-Thread Spears. It can be a bit difficult to find this one, in-game so let's go over where exactly in Elden Ring it can be found.

Disclaimer: This is a Shadow of the Erdtree DLC exclusive Incantation, meaning only those with the DLC can access the area it is found in or use the Incantation altogether.

The Tarnished secretes sticky thread and twists them into two frontward flying spears.

Unlike a lot of other Sorceries and Incantations in this DLC, Pest-Thread Spears actually belong to a sub-category of Incantations, similar to the Aspect of the Crucible Incantation or the Beastial Incantations. However, this is a new category called Saint of the Bud Incantations, and the only other one that is in this sub-category is another Incantation called Rotten Butterflies that you can obtain using the Remembrance of the Saint of the Bud.

Overall, Pest-Thread Spears is an incredibly powerful Incantation. A lot of the Incantations, Ashes of War, and Sorceries that hit multiple times (and therefore absolutely shred against giant enemies) have been nerfed over the course of Elden Ring's lifespan. The Shower of Bubbles of the Envoy Horn, for example, even got a big nerf alongside the DLC that reduced the amount of both general damage and poise damage it dealt.

However, Pest-Thread Spears are new and therefore haven't really been adjusted yet, which is why their damage is so staggeringly high. In general, this Incantation has a decently long startup animation, but once the threads are fired they have a decent amount of homing on their target and they fly at a relatively decent speed. It's very likely that this Incantation will be nerfed in a future patch, even if it's only a 'little' too strong, so absolutely take advantage of them now against the larger bosses in the DLC.

Pest-Thread Spears Precise Location

Where to Find The Incantation

To obtain the Pest-Thead Spears, you'll want to be in the Rauh Ancient Ruins. From here, progress naturally through the Ruins, exploring at your leisure until you come across an indoor area where these Kindred of Rot can be found and there is rot water(?) covering the ground. Careful though, these are new (and more difficult) variants of the Kindred of Rot, as you can see by their red color, and they do some truly obscene damage, so you'll want to progress through this area very carefully. Additionally, make sure to ride Torrent through here, as when you do the Rot on the ground won't affect you.

Head through this new rot-filled area and progress onward (and upward) until you reach the Church of the Bud, Main Entrance Site of Grace. From this Site of Grace:

  • Head back inside the Ruins you just came out of to reach this Grace.
  • Ride Torrent back to the elevator that took you up to this level, avoiding or killing the Kindred of Rot along the way.
  • Standing in front of the elevator, the stairs you took down here should now be behind you, turn around and follow either the left or right side of the stairs until you end up behind said stairs.
  • There, on a body on the ground in the ankle-deep water, should be the Pest-Thread Spears Incantation.

This Incantation is pretty easy to find, but only if you fully explore the rot-infested area around the Church of the Bud. And, considering the environment and the enemies found here, this isn't something that a lot of us are all that excited to do, so a lot of players end up unknowingly missing this Incantation entirely over the course of their long playthrough of this absurdly large DLC expansion.
