Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree Should Lean on One Dark Souls 3 DLC More Than Another

Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree has a lineage of expansions to draw inspiration from and it will hopefully avoid the pitfalls of Dark Souls 3 DLCs.

In a new post on the Elden Ring subreddit, user Wild_Magician_7932 highlights an artwork that is featured on the Steam page of Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. In the picture, players can see an extremely creepy-looking enemy lurking in the woods, with a swamp below it. While there are tons of interesting things in the picture, meticulous fans were quick to draw parallels between the enemy and Bloodborne's dreaded Winter Lanterns, a foe that quickly built up Frenzy when looking at players.

Shadow of the Erdtree DLC May Be Drawing Inspiration From Bloodborne's Dreaded Winter Lanterns

The idea of Winter Lanterns being featured in Elden Ring has surfaced in the community in the past as well, as they are extremely challenging to deal with and fit FromSoftware's approach of notoriously difficult expansions. User LargeRichardJohnson highlights that the connection doesn't seem that far-fetched considering the fact that its appearance gives the vibe that it could possibly be a Frenzied Flame version of the enemy, which is similar to the Frenzy buildup by Winter Lanterns. That being said, players are a bit divided on that, with many advocating for the fact that the color theme suggests that it is a Death Blight enemy instead, which is in fact even worse to deal with.

Players are already saying that they'd be lucky if it is a Frenzied Flame version instead of Death Blight, as the latter would be extremely difficult to deal with. Another interesting theory is that the trees in the background would serve as a way to avoid the line of sight of the enemy. With poison swamps already confirmed for Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, it wouldn't be surprising if the expansion had a big threat like this to dread.
