Elden Ring has a number of friendly characters, most being in the Roundtable Hold. One of the more polite and soft-spoken of these characters is Rogier. The first place players can meet him is in the chapel of Stormveil Castle, and after defeating Godrick the Grafted, Rogier moves into the Roundtable Hold.

However, players may be quick to notice that something is amiss with Sorcerer Rogier . He mentions he cannot fight anymore, nor do much of anything in his current state. As the game progresses, he mentions that he is going to fall into a deep sleep. At a certain point, he dies where he was sitting, and players can take his things. Elden Ring does not go into detail as to why Rogier died, though (especially if the player has not gone under Stormveil Castle).

What Happened To Rogier Under Stormveil Castle

The major answer to how Rogier died is in a hidden area of Stormveil Castle. The hidden area is a basement, and there is an optional boss of an Ulcerated Tree Spirit, but that is not the key to Rogier's condition. Instead, the answer lies at the very bottom where there is a warped and deflated-looking giant face. Among the marks of player deaths will actually be Rogier, he will be seen getting Death Blight.

As for what the face is and why it gave Rogier Death Blight, it is believed that his face corpse of Godwyn, the demigod who was assassinated in the Night of the Black Knives. He is also called the Prince of Death because he was the first of Those Who Live in Death and is their creator, as his body was buried and corrupted the Erdtree roots so that some souls cannot rejoin with the Erdtree and are stuck in a living-death-like state. This corpse is also what gave rise to Deathroot.

Rogier is a man who used to hunt Those Who Live in Death with D, but then felt mercy for those they hunted and set on his own path. He hopes to find out who killed Godwyn, and so it would be quite in character for him to venture into this hidden room and examine the giant face-corpse. Unfortunately for him, though, Godwyn's corpse is incredibly corrupted and dangerous. During his examination, Death Blight took ahold of Rogier.

What Is Death Blight?

Death Blight is a deadly status effect in Elden Ring. It is an effect that can build up and once there is enough build-up, it instantly kills its victim with a firework of roots through the body. From a lore perspective, fans believe the status effect is another consequence of Godwyn's corpse. Some fans have theorized the roots that kill the victim are the same as Deathroot, roots that are corrupted with Destined Death from the blades that killed Godwyn.

Rogier took a heavy dose of Death Blight by messing with Godwyn's corpse. He managed to survive the initial impaling, but the roots are slowly spreading in his body. As he sits in the Roundtable Hold, many players took note that he has covered his legs with a blanket. Upon closer inspection, there are some roots sticking out of his legs.

What triggers Rogier to pass away is dependent on Ranni's questline. Once the player serves under her, Rogier will mention he is on the brink of a deep slumber. After resting at a site of Grace, he will be in a wakeless sleep at the Roundtable Hold. After more progress is made in the game, Rogier will eventually be found in the same spot, dead. This fate seems unavoidable, as no player has reported beating the game with Rogier alive.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
