Elden Ring has become almost comically scarce with updates about the highly-anticipated title from developer From Software. The partnering of From Software and G.R.R. Martin of Game of Thrones fame has become one the most followed releases, despite the vacuum of new details. Publisher Bandai Namco has been confirmed for an appearance at this year's E3, and fans are hoping this means more news coming about Elden Ring. If Bandai Namco wants to show off the game in a way that'll help keep fans engaged, the next trailer will need to go for broke.

Fans looking for Elden Ring at E3 will likely need to keep expectations in check. Bandai Namco publishes a huge swath of both original and licensed games, so it's definitely possible that no new information on Elden Ring will be at the show. If the game does make an appearance, a new trailer will likely need to be heavy on details and gameplay in order to keep its fans satiated.

Bandai Namco's participation in E3 is the first glimmer of hope for a game that hasn't received any updates in well over a year. Given the year that was 2020, delays in development were almost inevitable as Covid-19 impacted the industry as a whole. But even games with similarly extended periods without updates, like Diablo 4, have still received new information especially in the past few months. While a nebulous information campaign is right in line with the general themes of FromSoftware games, many fans have become exasperated with the lack of new information about one of the most anticipated games.

Rumors and leaks about Elden Ring have been plenty, but without much substance. The only substantial leak came from a recently leaked bit of recorded gameplay, totaling a staggering six seconds, but fans have had much less to work with until now. The game has become almost mythical in terms of its news cycle, so a new trailer would have to show off a lot of what fans are hoping to see if it engenders any hope in its fans.

The biggest things fans will be looking for are new revelations about the new game world and a glimpse into Elden Ring's gameplay. Many of course are assuming that Elden Ring will be more similar to Dark Souls than Bloodborne or Sekiro, but each From Software game has included new twists on its now-classic formula. So fans will be eager to see what new mechanics will make their way into Elden Ring.

Being light on story details fits the From Software model for narratives in its games, but a new trailer will need to either show more existing characters or surprise with new characters and enemies. Many fans are expecting Elden Ring to be the biggest game FromSoftware has created to date, which is a high bar for the developer to meet. But with that kind of expectation already set, new details about Elden Ring's world and characters would be one of the biggest gifts to a wanting fan base. Showing off gameplay mechanics and surprising with new world and character details are two of the main ways a new Elden Ring trailer needs to go big for its fans.

Elden Ring is currently in development.
