After defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon in Elden Ring's Academy of Raya Lucaria, players will encounter a chest. Fans will not be able to open Rennala's chest straightaway, though, as they must first obtain the Discarded Palace Key. This guide will detail exactly where players can find that key, allowing them to unlock the Raya Lucaria Grand Library chest in Elden Ring and claim the reward that is inside.
Elden Ring: How to Open Raya Lucaria Academy Grand Library Chest
To note, providing precise information on how to obtain the Discarded Palace Key requires that an entire quest line be spoiled. For those players that would prefer to avoid such massive spoilers, it may be sufficient to say that the relevant quest line is initiated by speaking with Ranni in Ranni's Rise after defeating Royal Knight Loretta in Caria Manor. These two locations are situated in the northwest corner of Elden Ring's Liurnia region, and players that do not want to know anymore are advised to stop reading now.
After offering to serve Ranni the Witch at the top of Ranni's Rise, players should speak with the NPCs downstairs, and Ranni once again, to be allowed to leave the tower. Fans should then travel to Nokron, Eternal City, collect the Fingerslayer Blade from a large chest in the Night's Sacred Ground, and return it to the witch. For the uninitiated, here are details on exactly how to reach Nokron:
- Defeat Elden Ring's Starscourge Radahn boss at Redmane Castle in Caelid.
- Travel to the Mistwood Outskirts Site of Grace in east Limgrave and ride southeast to reach a column of floating rocks.
- Carefully descend into the pit to reach a series of tunnels that lead to Nokron.
Upon speaking with Ranni, players will receive the Carian Inverted Statue, which they should place on the pedestal in the Carian Study Hall to the east of the Academy Gate Town in Liurnia. Elden Ring fans must then work their way through the inverted Study Hall, cross over to the Divine Tower of Liurnia, and collect the Cursemark of Death. With this item in hand, players should return to the area with Ranni's Rise, climb the ladder in Renna's Rise to the northeast, and use the portal at the top.
Fans will now find themselves at Ainsel River Main, and they should loot the Miniature Ranni key item that is in the open coffin in front of them. This item should then be taken to the nearby Site of Grace in Elden Ring, which players should rest at before repeatedly selecting "talk to miniature Ranni" to trigger a dialogue. Fans must now find and defeat the Baleful Shadow at the bottom of a tower to the west of the Nokstella, Eternal City Site of Grace in the Ainsel River area, and the route that should be taken is show in the video above.
As soon as the Baleful Shadow has been defeated, players will receive the Discarded Palace Key, and they can now return to Elden Ring's Raya Lucaria Academy to open Rennala's chest. For those fans that are curious, the item inside the chest is the Dark Moon Ring, and it plays an important part in completing Ranni's quest line.
