Elden Ring, being a FromSoftware game, features everybody's favorite backstabbing NPC: Patches. In Elden Ring, he serves as a recurring character who can sell players items, provide useful information, and yes, kick unsuspecting players down a cliff. In this guide, players can learn how to progress Patches' questline.

Elden Ring is an open-world action-adventure game in which players take on the role of the Tarnished, who seek to become Elden Lord. To accomplish this goal, they must journey across the Lands Between and face off against powerful bosses who hold shards of the titular Elden Ring.

Finding Murkwater Cave

Elden Ring Patches The Untethered Location Limbrage Murkwater Cave

Locating Patches in Elden Ring will first require players to locate and explore Murkwater Cave, located in Limgrave. To reach Murkwater Cave, players should follow the river north from Agheel Lake and watch for a cave entrance on their left.

If it is a player's first time following the river like this, they will be invaded by Bloody Finger Nerijus once they are close to the cave. Since being invaded causes the cave to become blocked off, players will need to eliminate Nerijus before exploring the cave properly.

Once inside the cave, players need only take the right-hand path from the first chamber after the Site of Grace to reach a boss room. Entering the boss room and opening the chest will cause a very annoyed Patches to arrive and attack the player.

Reduce Patches health to half and then stop attacking when he asks and, after a short delay, the player can speak to Patches. Forgiving Patches and exhausting his dialog will cause him to open a shop inside the boss room after the player next rests at a Site of Grace or reloads the area.

Patches sells Margit's Shackle, which can momentarily stun Margit the Fell Omen twice during the first phase of the boss fight.

A Scenic Storefront

Patches will remain in Murkwater Cave until Godrick the Grafted is defeated or when the player enters Liurna of the Lakes after completing the previous steps. Patches will have moved to the Scenic Isle Site of Grace and set up shop again.

He will inform the player about an Abductor Virgin below Raya Lucaria Academy that has the power of transportation, and claims it could carry the player "To the Foot of the Erdtree." Taking his advice is optional but will lead to a short dungeon culminating in a boss fight with a pair of Abductor Virgins.

Ah, Familiar Sight Ahead

Patches' next appearance is on the cliffs near the Mt Gelmir Ninth Bonfire Site of Grace. When approaching the cliffs shortly before the bonfire (when coming from the direction of the Mt Gelmir First Bonfire Site of Grace), players can find a message indicating that treasure can be found by following a trail of rainbow stones.

Following the stones to the cliff edge will cause Patches to appear, kicking the player down the cliff and telling them to "Stay away from Volcano Manor." This can be useful if players manage to survive the ensuing basilisk attack. It leaves players at a location that could otherwise only be reached by circling Mt Gelmir and approaching from further south via a ravine.

Volcano Manor Merchant

Elden Ring Volcano Manor Tanith

Patches will move to Volcano Manor if the player chooses to join the Manor, setting up shop in the hallway just before the Volcano Manor Site of Grace. Here, he reveals his true allegiance to the Manor, and that your decision makes you comrades.

He will remain at the Manor selling his wares until the player defeats Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, and then exhausts Patches' dialog. Patches will leave the next time the area is reloaded after doing so, making it essential to make any last-minute purchases before he leaves again.

Shaded Castle

Patches final known appearance in the game is at Shaded Castle in the north of Altus Plateau, where he can be found just before the boss room. He will give the Dancer's Castonettes to the player when spoken to and will vanish if the area is reloaded after he does so.

The Dancer's Castonettes can be given to Lady Tannith at Volcano Manor, but this currently does not appear to affect the game.

Elden Ring is available now for Playstation 4, Playstation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
