Elden Ring is now available across the world. FromSoftware's newest RPG has garnered outstanding critical reviews and a massive player count based on early metrics. Yet even that can't stop the reality of FromSoftware's tradition of poor game performance at launch. Elden Ring has key notable performance issues right out the gate and no timeline for when fixes will arrive. While Elden Ring players power on, Bandai Namco did confirm one fix is on the way. It's for an issue on PS5 that's preventing saves from going through.

In an update from Bandai Namco shared Friday morning, the publisher confirmed that FromSoftware is hard at work addressing the many issues Elden Ring is currently dealing with. One significant issue that Bandai Namco called attention to is a problem with PS5 and save files. The bug will trigger if PS5 Elden Ring players "unexpectedly" turn off the console while playing or while the PS5 is in rest mode. The result is that Elden Ring won't save correctly, leaving players with lost progress.

Long story short, if a PS5 player powers off their console for the night assuming an auto-save will have them covered, they could be wrong. The game does not necessarily create a save when the console shuts off. Rest Mode sounds like it's fine, but powering off the console isn't.

For the time being, Bandai Namco recommends that all Elden Ring players ensure that they get a proper save by using the in-game menu to "Quit Game" before powering off the console. That's not to say that auto-saves aren't reliable, too, but clearly there's a bug involved which may impact players in ways that aren't fully known. It's better to be safe than it is to be sorry.

In time, FromSoftware will be able to get to the root of the issue and deliver a patch. A release window for that patch is not yet available, however. All Bandai Namco says is that it's being worked on. Other issues to be addressed in the near future include the mouse on PC being too sensitive and Steam users' Easy Anti-Cheat failing to launch. Performance will obviously be a focus, too, but Bandai Namco is making no commitments to patches on that subject yet.

Elden Ring is a FromSoftware game through and through. That means players can expect challenging yet compelling gameplay, a beautiful world full of mystery and secrets, and, unfortunately, poor optimization and lots of bugs.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
