Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – Burning Questions, Answered

Fans have a lot of questions about Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – this guide collects and answers a variety of common queries for SOTE.

But no matter how hard one tries to make a good build on their first go, most players' first build will be flawed and have bad stat placements. Fortunately, Elden Ring provides a way for players to respec.

Updated June 6, 2024 by Erik Petrovich: The Elden Ring respec system can be accessed relatively soon into the game, after players beat the final boss of the Raya Lucaria Academy legacy dungeon. But the process to respec your stats – or, in this case, undergo Rebirth – can be challenging as it requires you to both collect rare and limited items and to carefully consider your choices. This guide has been updated to more clearly explain how to respec in Elden Ring, including corrected information about the point at which players are able to respec, as well as to include a new video walkthrough of how to unlock respec in Elden Ring that shows all steps required.

How To Respec

To respec, players will need to obtain an exceedingly rare item called Larval Tear . This object will allow a player to reset a character's stats and level, setting your stat values to the base level for your starter class, and refunding every skill point spend thusfar.

Before players can use Larval Tears to respec in Elden Ring, they must complete the Raya Lucaria Academy legacy dungeon, and defeat Rennala. To do so, you must first find the Glintstone Key, which grants admission to Raya Lucaria Academy. Obtaining this key is a challenging but straightforward process of finding the map by the entrance and following it to find it guarded by a sleeping dragon.

Upon acquiring a Glintstone Key, players must return to the Raya Lucaria Academy library, defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon , then re-load the area to discover that she has become a friendly NPC. To respec in Elden Ring, you must talk to her and use a Larval Tear to select the "Rebirth" option.

Elden Ring: What To Do Before Shadow of the Erdtree

Though the only requirement to access SOTE is to defeat two bosses, there are a lot of things players can do to prepare for the new Elden Ring DLC.

Larval Tears can be found all over the Lands Between, especially in the Eternal Cities, but there is a limited number of them. Be very careful with your choices when respeccing in Elden Ring because it means one less Larval Tear to re-spec later on.

If you need to cancel Rebirth, like to check a piece of gear for its stat requirements, your Larval Tear will not be consumed.

When To Respec

Considering the great lengths required to have the opportunity to respec, players should do so cautiously and at the right moment. However, when is the best time to respec a character? While it is tempting to respec immediately when available, players should be patient and wait mid to late-game before doing so.

By this time, they will have considerable experience, an understanding of their preferred playstyle, and knowledge of Elden Ring's available gear or spells. In addition, players will be better able to respec again if their new build is ineffective or undesirable. Being patient is the best method when respeccing as it allows players to learn, plan, and prepare for a new character build. If you pull the trigger too early, and end up needing to respec again to meet requirements for a new spell or armament, that's a waste of Larval Tears.
