The 
Dark Moon Ring is a very important item in Elden Ring that is needed to complete the questline of Ranni the Witch. Acquiring it requires players to visit a familiar locale halfway through Ranni's Questline, which is hinted at by Ranni's "final" gift to the player at that point. Ranni's Questline grants access to several very useful and powerful items, an alternate ending, and even a nod to FromSoftware's previous titles.
Elden Ring is an action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. As a Tarnished Warrior, unable to die and previously sent away from the Lands Between, players must follow the guidance of grace and face off against demigods in order to acquire the great runes. These powerful runes are shards of the Elden Ring and will allow their bearer to ascend the throne as Elden Lord.
Acquiring the Discarded Palace Key
The Ring itself is located somewhere most players will be very familiar with, but a special key is required before it can be acquired. The Discarded Palace Key is acquired as a reward from Ranni the Witch during her questline. Players will need to progress Ranni's questline until they retrieve the Cursemark of Death from atop the Divine Tower of Liurna (which itself requires the Inverted Statue acquired from retrieving the Fingerslaying Blade for Ranni).
After acquiring the Cursemark of Death a change occurs in the Liurna region, as the barrier blocking access to Renna's Rise disappears. This allows players to climb Renna's Rise and gain access to both the Snow Witch Set (Ranni's outfit) and a waygate. Using this waygate allows players to reach an area known as Ainsel River Main. A Ranni Doll can be found here, along with a Site of Grace, so players should grab the Doll and then rest at the Site of Grace.
At this Site of Grace, players can now attempt to speak to the Ranni Doll. Doing this three times will cause Ranni to reveal herself, having possessed the doll, and task the player with slaying the Baleful Shadow. This enemy is found further into the area, past the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace, near a pair of coffins. This enemy fights almost identically to Blaidd the Half-Wolf but has a greatsword imbued with Destined Death rather than frost.
Speaking to Ranni via the doll will cause her to reward the player with the Discarded Palace Key and vacate the doll.
How to Get the Dark Moon Ring
Now that the Discarded Palace Key has been retrieved, players will need to head for the Raya Lucaria Grand Library, the same place where Rennala of the Full Moon is fought. Players will likely have noticed the locked chest sitting near the Site of Grace, and this is what the Discarded Palace Key is for. Crack open the chest to acquire the Dark Moon Ring, a gift Ranni is supposed to give to her Consort.
What Does the Dark Moon Ring Do?
The Dark Moon Ring is needed in order to complete Ranni's Questline, though players will need to jump through a few more hoops before they reach the place where it can be used. Players will need to return to Ainsel River and seek out the Sea of Rot. On the far side of the Sea of Rot is the Grand Cloister, where interacting with a large coffin in the rot will allow players to climb into it and travel even further.
In the new area the coffin takes players to, the boss known as Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, can be found. Defeat this boss to open up a new path that leads to a previously inaccessible part of Liurna known as the Moonlight Altar. Traveling to the Cathedral of Manus Seres, found in this new area and guarded by Glintstone Dragon Adula, players can find a hole in the ground near a Site of Grace, which leads to the location of a battle.
Players will be able to interact with Ranni here to place the ring on her finger, completing her questline and gaining the Dark Moon Greatsword (the latest version of the recurring FromSoftware weapon, the Moonlight Greatsword).
