In Elden Ring, players will eventually be required to traverse Leyndell, Royal Capital, and confront Morgott, the Omen King. A powerful but familiar foe, Morgott serves as the gatekeeper for several late-game areas and must be bested before any of the game's endings can be reached. In this guide, players will find a variety of tips, tricks, and tactics to help them overcome this deadly foe.

Elden Ring is an open-world action-RPG developed by FromSoftware, in which players take on the role of the Tarnished. The Tarnished have been called back to the Lands Between to seek out the shardbearers and repair the Elden Ring, becoming the Elden Lord in the process.

Morgott the Omen King

Morgott begins the battle with a familiar fighting style, reusing his attacks and moves from the previous encounter(s) with him as "Margit, the Fell Omen." Players should watch closely for his Hammer slam attacks and use them as an opportunity to dodge around behind him for a counterattack, as they are well telegraphed and are easier to read than his other attacks. He will also sometimes create a spear to jab forward quickly, so players should keep an eye on his empty hand to see what weapon he is conjuring and prepare their dodge accordingly.

He often makes use of daggers to pelt the player from a distance, but watching for his throw and dodging to the left or right should make avoiding these fairly easy, leaving an opportunity for healing, using items, or casting spells immediately afterward.

The most dangerous attack during this first phase is his hammer combo, which begins with him conjuring a hammer and dashing towards the player. Morgott will then perform a series of sweeping attacks with hammer and sword, but there is an opening after the combo finishes when he can be attacked during his recovery animation.

Elden Ring_Morgott Boss 2

At half health, Morgott will fall to one knee and begin charging an explosion attack, so players should move as far away from him as possible to avoid the blast. After this, Morgott will begin attacking more rapidly and introducing several new deadly attacks to his arsenal.

The first of these involves him conjuring several dozen swords in the sky above the arena and raining them down after a short delay. The best way to dodge this attack is to move away from him and watch the sky to ensure the character is not directly under any of the blades.

Morgott's other attacks during this phase hint at his relation to Mohg, Lord of Blood. Morgott can now perform an attack that coats his blade in red energy before performing a pair of slashes that send out shockwaves a short distance. Players should dodge to the left or right as he swings to dodge both slices, and this is also a good opportunity to roll around him for a melee attack from behind. His other blood-themed attack is a charged thrust that will impale the player and hurl them away for high damage if it connects. Watch for him beginning the thrust and dodge left or right to avoid it, allowing a brief opportunity to exploit his recovery from the attack with a counterattack.

Melee Strategies

Elden Ring_Morgott Charge Attack

Players specializing in melee weapons will need to take advantage of the brief periods when Morgott isn't attacking. The most notable of these are his recovery animations after using his hammer attacks or, during phase 2, the recovery animation of his charged sword thrust attack. Another attack that offers you a chance to counterattack is his spinning attack that ends with slamming both swords down in front of him. Backing off to heal and use items is also very effective during this fight since Morgott can only attack at range by hurling his spear or daggers which are relatively easy to dodge if players keep an eye on him.

Morgott is most vulnerable to slashing damage, so using slashing weapons will allow players to deal extra damage to him during the fight. Conversely, he is resistant to holy damage, so it's best to avoid using weapons that deal holy damage during this fight. Morgott does not resist any of the other elemental damage types, meaning that weapons dealing Magic, Fire, and Lightning Damage are also effective against him.

To be precise, Morgott has no resistance to Magic, Fire, or Lightning Damage, and takes 10% more damage from slashing attacks.

Builds utilizing status effects like Bleed/Hemorrhage and Frostbite can be very effective at tearing through Morgott's health bar. Frostbite also causes the target to take 20% more damage from all sources for 30 seconds, which is very handy, but you can also purge the effect early by dealing fire damage. This allows you to continue building-up Frostbite and deal the bonus damage from triggering it more frequently, so it's good to consider when to utilize the debuff and when to purge it for more burst damage. Morgott is equally vulnerable to all status effects except for sleep and madness/frenzy. Morgott is entirely immune to madness and is a bit more resistant to sleep compared to the other status effects available to the player.

Suggested Ashes of War

  • Flaming Strike: Adding extra fire damage to your attacks is always nice, but this Ash also deals a decent chunk of HP and Stance damage with its second-input attack.
  • Ice Spear: Having access to a Ranged Projectile on demand allows you to hit Morgott from a distance when he's using his Sword Rain and during the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2. This attack also deals a decent amount of Stance damage and can inflict frostbite.
  • Spectral Lance: This Weapon Skill is similarly useful as a ranged option, allowing you to throw out spectral spears on demand to chip away at Morgott when he's out of melee range. This Weapon Skill is a little lacking in damage but offers excellent Stance damage, helping you to break Morgott's poise and open him up to a critical attack.
  • Poison Moth Flight: This Weapon Skill is great for Status builds, allowing you to inflict Deadly Poison on Morgott and chip away rapidly at his health. While poison isn't quite as powerful as some other status effects, this remains a great way to deal extra damage throughout the fight. The poison effect from this Weapon Skill actually deals more damage over a shorter period of time when compared to most other poison sources, so using this to "pop" poison on a target is a great way to dish out damage.
  • Blood Blade: This pairs a ranged damage option with Bleed build-up, allowing you to keep the pressure up on Morgott when it's too dangerous to get close. Just be mindful of the HP drain from this Skill (or grab the Red Branch Talisman and use it to your advantage.)
  • Blood Tax: This multi-striking Skill deals a lot of damage over multiple hits, while also making it easy to inflict bleed build-up. If you have access to it, it's a solid choice, though its placement in the Mohgwyn Dynasty area means it can be tricky to reach.

Sorcery Strategies

Elden Ring_Morgott Phase 2

Sorcerers have a huge advantage during this fight since Morgott predominantly uses melee attacks, and it is relatively straightforward to dodge his two ranged attacks and pick him off from a distance with spells like Glintstone Pebble, Great Glintstone Shard, Magic Glintblade, and especially Comet Azur if the player has learned it. Comet Azur, in particular, is devastating during this fight, especially when paired with a Flask of Wonderous Physick mixed with a Cerulean Hidden Tear to reduce the casting cost to 0.

Simply line up the attack (possibly with the aid of Melina and/or Spirit Summons to keep Morgott busy) and concentrate the spell on Morgott to melt through his health bar rapidly. When he enters phase 2, wait for him to cast his sword rain spell or concentrate his attacks on an ally and then cast it again to continue burning through him.

Incantation Strategies

Elden Ring_Morgott Incantation

When considering Incantations for this fight, players should remember Morgott's inherent resistance to holy damage and avoid spells that deal holy damage. Excellent spells for taking down Morgott are the dragon incantations Rotten Breath and Ekzykes's Decay, which can inflict scarlet rot on him while dealing huge amounts of damage.

Glintstone Breath and Smarag's Glintstone Breath are also very effective at dealing damage to Morgott. Flame Incantations like Catch Flame, Flame Sling, and Flame of the Fell God are also very effective at dealing damage to Morgott from a distance. Mixed Incantation and melee builds should take advantage of weapon buffs like Electrify Armament, Bloodflame Blade, or Poison Armament alongside general buffs like Golden Vow and Flame, Grant Me Strength to enhance the damage dealt by their strikes while following the advice from the melee section of this guide.

Where to Go After Beating Morgott, The Omen King

Elden Ring_Leyndell_The Rold Route

Once you've taken down Morgott you'll be able to approach the Erdtree. Unfortunately, it's been sealed off and the keys are inside. Therefore, arson is our only option to get past the thorns and into the Erdtree. Melina will suggest exactly this when you stop at the Grace after inspecting the thorns, before giving you the Rold Medallion. This works a lot like the two Dectus Medallion pieces used to activate the Lift between Liurnia and the Altus Plateau, allowing the one holding it to activate the Great Lift of Rold.

To find the Great Lift of Rold, you'll need to head back into the Capital, to either the Avenue Balcony or East Capital Rampart Sites of Grace. Taking the path from the East Capital Rampart Site of Grace requires you to have already activated the elevator nearby, which allows you to descend to the main road easily.

Avenue Balcony Route

Head up the stairs and through the door straight ahead after travelling to this grace, then take a left turn and follow the main road to find a large door. You can open this door to access a new section of the capital, largely occupied by demihumans and perfumers. Follow the path up the stairs and all the way to an elevator, which you can use to get up onto the bridge above. Crossing this bridge will take you to the Forbidden Lands Elevator, which you can use to access the Forbidden Lands. Place a marker on the red mark that Melina placed on your map to help you navigate and ride through the Forbidden Lands to find the Great Lift of Rold, which you can use to access the next main area: Mountaintops of the Giants.

East Capital Rampart Route

Head out to the area overlooking Leyndell and turn right to find the elevator, which will take you down to street level. Head out the door past where the Crucible Knight is (they don't respawn once killed, so don't worry if they're missing) and turn left to find the main road. Follow the main road left to find a large door leading to a new section of the capital. Head up the stairs and along the path to find the elevator up onto the bridge, then cross the bridge and use the elevator on the far side to reach the Forbidden Lands. Place a marker on the red mark that Melina placed on your map to help you navigate and ride through the Forbidden Lands to find the Great Lift of Rold, which you can use to access the next main area: Mountaintops of the Giants.
