Elden Ring features one of the largest and most imposing worlds that From Software has ever created. It's staggering just how much there is to see and do in the expansive open world, with tons of secrets and hidden areas just waiting to be explored. But some of these areas are hidden behind gates and other locked barriers.

During their journey through Elden Ring, players will happen upon elevators, mist walls, doors, and other areas that require the use of something called a Stonesword Key. These areas are guarded by Imp Statues that players must insert the key into to gain access. But where can players find these Stonesword Keys? Here's a look at where these handy (and rare) items are and some of the places that players may be able to use them.

Where To Find Stonesword Keys In Elden Ring

Stonesword Keys are found in a variety of ways but one of the most common is through exploration. Stonesword Keys can be practically anywhere, but players will usually find them on the bodies of fallen soldiers and other NPCs. Players that explore constantly will usually pick up a couple of these keys, just through curiosity. It's important to check every possible nook and cranny in a given area as sometimes these Stonesword Keys can be off the beaten path, hidden behind illusionary walls, behind breakable objects, or at the ends of platforming sections.

Players will be able to find one Stonesword Key pretty early into their journey by visiting the Stormhill Shack. Near the Site of Grace, players should spot a body in a sitting position and leaning against the wall of a shack. Searching this body will yield the Stonesword Key. There are tons of these items to find scattered across Elden Ring and players will need to collect as many of them as possible if they want to access all the hidden areas locked behind gates, lifts, and walls.

What Are Stonesword Keys Used For?

As mentioned above, Stonesword Keys are used to unlock otherwise inaccessible areas. These areas can contain a wide array of things, from powerful items, to upgrade materials, to bosses, and everything in-between. They can even unlock shortcuts or entirely new zones to explore. Players will want to be sure to keep an eye out for any Stone Imp Statues, as these are a clear marker that a Stonesword Key is required to progress.

Players looking to use a Stonesword Key early on will get their first opportunity after leaving the "tutorial area." They'll notice a large misty wall that's blocking the entrance to what looks like a pit, with a stone Imp Statue in front of it. This Imp Statue will already have one Stonesword Key lodged into the bottom head, meaning it requires one additional key to finally unlock the wall. Players that give a key to the statue will be able to access a completely new area that stretches far underground, featuring loot and a rather challenging boss.

It's important to note that some Imp Statues take multiple keys to unlock, and players will be able to note how many keys are needed by how many Imp Heads there are, and whether they have any sword hilts jutting out from their foreheads.

Elden Ring is available for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
