Elden Ring is not only a game of deadly bosses and gloomy catacombs, but also long and intriguing quests. With no easy markers and no journal, it can be difficult to define what makes a quest in Elden Ring, though they almost all involve NPCs in some way. Most of the game's NPCs are troubled by the dark and dangerous world they live in, and one unusual item offers some respite.

The Tonic of Forgetfulness is a potion that promises to "banish distress and bitter memories." It was originally gifted by Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy to his consort Lady Tanith, in order to allow her to forget his descent into heresy and monstrosity. However, she refused to take the Tonic as it would cause her to forget her love of Rykard and can offer it to the player instead.

How to Get The Tonic of Forgetfulness in Elden Ring

Lady Tanith is the proprietress of Volcano Manor, and players will have to journey to the far northwest of Elden Ring's map to find her. Advancing Lady Tanith's quest to the point that she hands over the Tonic of Forgetfulness requires players to have met and helped her adopted daughter Rya.

Although players can encounter Rya earlier in the game, the important thing is to speak to her after beginning Lady Tanith's Tarnished-hunting quest.

It's vital that players don't advance too quickly through Lady Tanith's quest, and players will need to go back to speak to Rya between each step. The quest involves three assassinations, but completing them all will lock players out of gaining the Tonic of Forgetfulness.

After speaking to Rya and completing the first assassination, players will be able to find her in an unusual form in another room of the Volcano Manor. Returning after the second assassination will have her give players a hint about a secret wall in the next room.

After this, players should follow the secret through Volcano Manor to defeat the Godskin Noble and give the Serpent's Amnion from the altar in the boss room to Rya. After reloading the area, Rya will have disappeared from the manor, and players can mention her absence to Lady Tanith to gain the Tonic of Forgetfulness.

How to Use the Tonic of Forgetfulness in Elden Ring

Once players have acquired the Tonic of Forgetfulness key item in Elden Ring, they have a couple of different options for how to use it.

The first is to do as Lady Tanith asks and give the Tonic to Rya. Players will be able to find Rya by taking the lift from the Temple of Eiglay and jumping off at the hidden exit just before the top floor.

Rya can be found in a nearby room on the opposite side of a lava flow. If players give her the Tonic of Forgetfulness, she will fall asleep and return to her original room with alternate dialogue after Rykard has been defeated.

Alternatively, players can attempt to give the Tonic of Forgetfulness to Brother Corhyn after his journey with Goldmask has taken him to the Stargazer's Ruins in the Mountaintops of the Giants. At this point, Corhyn is beginning to doubt his master, and players can offer the Tonic to help him forget.

However, Corhyn will refuse the Tonic, and it will remain in the player's inventory. If Corhyn was offered the tonic, he will remain at Stargazer's Ruin until the end of the game and cannot be found despairing in Leyndell, Ashen Capital.

Elden Ring is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
