Elden Ring offers a wide variety of weapon classes, but they vary in terms of strength. Heavier weapons like colossal swords and giant hammers deal high stance damage, while daggers and thrusting swords feature fast movesets.

Among the unique weapon types, whips stand out by dealing no stance damage, making it impossible to break an enemy's poise with whip attacks. This often leads players to avoid using whips. However, those seeking a challenge will appreciate their unique moveset. Additionally, whips like the Giant’s Red Braid and the Magma Whip Candlestick come with impressive Ashes of War in Elden Ring.

To obtain the Giant’s Red Braid, players must defeat the iconic Fire Giant boss. In contrast, the Magma Whip Candlestick is obtained through an NPC questline. If you chose the Burn, O Flame! Incantation from the Remembrance of the Fire Giant or haven't yet fought the Fire Giant, the Magma Whip Candlestick is an excellent alternative to fulfill your whip needs in Elden Ring.

15 Awesome Side Quests Hidden In Elden Ring

Elden Ring has many secret quests that stray from the main path. Here are the best side quests hidden in the game.

Elden Ring: Magma Whip Candlestick Location Guide

In Elden Ring, the Magma Whip Candlestick is a reward for completing Patches’ assassination request. Like most NPC quests, it is quite easy to miss Patches unless you explore Limgrave thoroughly and stumble upon his hideout in Murkwater Cave. To get the Magma Whip Candlestick, you must progress through Patches' quest until he arrives at the Volcano Manor.

After sparing Patches’ life in Murkwater Cave, he becomes passive towards the player. As you progress through The Lands Between, Patches will also shift his location. Upon joining the Volcano Manor, Patches will move there and join the recusants. You must then complete Tanith’s assassination request to further progress Patches’ questline.

Elden Ring - Letter to Patches

Once you have defeated Old Knight Istvan, you can return to Patches and receive another assassination request from him. His target is the Great Horned Tragoth. Upon accepting his request, players will find a red mark north of the Ruin-Strewn Precipice Overlook. The invasion sign is located inside the cave where players fought the Magma Wyrm Makar. If you haven’t already fought this boss, you will need to defeat it to find the invasion sign.

Defeating Great Horned Tragoth will also reward you with the Bull-Goat armor set. After the fight, return to Patches and tell him about your victory. At first, he won't give you the reward. After resting at a site of grace, go back to Patches and question him about the reward for completing his assassination request. Only then will he reward you with the Magma Whip Candlestick.

The Magma Whip Candlestick can only be obtained before defeating Rykard, the Shardbearer boss located in Volcano Manor.

Is the Magma Whip Candlestick good or not?

Elden Ring - Dual Magma Whip Candlestick

The Magma Whip Candlestick is a unique whip weapon that scales primarily with Dexterity and Faith. To use this weapon, players will need 8 Strength, 16 Dexterity, and 18 Faith. At max level, the Magma Whip Candlestick has B scaling in Dexterity, C in Faith, and D in Strength.

As its name suggests, the Magma Whip Candlestick deals fire damage, and its Ash of War spews magma on the ground, similar to the Magma Blade. The weapon skill damage scales with Faith, making the Magma Whip Candlestick an excellent weapon for Faith builds. However, this weapon is not recommended for non-Faith builds, as most of its damage comes from the Ash of War.
