Gestures are as core a feature of FromSoftware RPGs as Dodge Rolls and the Message System. Where would the Dark Souls community be today if it wasn't for the Praise The Sun emote, after all? Thankfully, Gestures were brought back for Elden Ring alongside a robust new multiplayer system and a simplified way of doing them.
Gestures are typically used in multiplayer, both co-op and PvP, for players to communicate if they aren't using voice chat externally. Gestures in Elden Ring are not only more numerous than in previous FromSoftware games, but they are also easier to get thanks to the abundance of NPCs who hand them out.
What Are Gestures In Elden Ring?
Gestures, or emotes, are special animations that last for a few seconds. They can be used almost anytime in the overworld, but most players save the emoting for multiplayer. Players start with a sizable amount of Gestures, more than any previous FromSoftware game, which can be slotted and performed at will. They can even be added to messages, which creates a ghostly version of your character performing that Emote if other players look at your message.
Gestures like the three Pointing emotes can be used to guide other players in a direction (or you can use Point Downwards to disparage a PvP opponent). Emotes like Jump For Joy, Rallying Cry, or Bow are perfect for celebrating a downed boss with friends. There are countless gestures in Elden Ring that can be discovered and unlocked, too, including one tied to pre-order copies of the game only.
How To Perform A Gesture
To perform a Gesture, open up your player menu by pressing Start. On the right-hand side of the screen, you should see two sections, one for your pouch items, and one for Gestures. By using the D-pad to navigate to this section you will be able to choose one of six Gestures to perform.
Then, press A (or X) to perform the Gesture you've selected. To swap out a Gesture, select it and press Y (or Triangle) to bring up the customization menu. Here you can see a visual list of every Gesture you have unlocked on your character. Once you find the Gesture you want to replace the original with, just press A to choose it and you'll be brought back to the menu.
