Smithing stones in Elden Ring are essential to weapon enhancements. They come in two forms as either regular Smithing Stones or Somber Smithing Stones. As the player may guess, regular Smithing Stones help to scale normal weapons while the latter enhances the abilities of weapons with magical scaling. It may sound more complicated than it is because it is Elden Ring, after all!

Finding Somber Smithing Stones can prove to be a challenge, particularly when searching for the higher tiers (7, 8, and 9) which can assist in maxing out a weapon’s potential and bringing a build together. Somber Smithing Stone (7) can be a pain to search for, but there are ways to find these assets and make them readily available.

Where to Find Somber Smithing Stone (7)

There are several locations where Somber Smithing Stone (7) can be found. To name just a few locations, Volcano Manor, Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, Nokstella, and Deeproot Depths all have at least one lying around. Finding Somber Smithing Stone (7) can be done, but large quantities can upgrade more weapons, and reliability is hard to come by in Elden Ring.

The easiest way to acquire Somber Smithing Stone (7) is to first acquire Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 4. This Bell Bearing, once given to the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold, will allow the purchase of Somber Smithing Stone (7) and Somber Smithing Stone (8), eliminating the necessity to go out and scavenge for them.

The Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 4 can be found in Crumbling Farum Azula. As a general note, if the player does not yet have access to Crumbling Farum Azula, story progression is necessary in order to get the Bearing. This Bell Bearing is relatively simple as it sits directly in front of the Tempest Facing Balcony Site of Grace. Directly North of this Site, a decrepit body sits just at the edge of the cliff. Investigating the body will grant the player with the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 4.

Returning this to the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold will allow the tarnished to purchase the Somber Smithing Stone (7) from them at the cost of 16000 runes. The player can purchase as many as they would like (up to 999 in inventory) now that the Twin Maiden Husks have the Bell Bearing. Keep in mind that if the player chooses to begin a new game + that the Bell Bearings do not carry over.

As already mentioned before, Somber Smithing Stone (7) can definitely be found in the world in other areas, but meticulously combing through each area for these small artifacts will prove far more time-consuming and resource intensive than claiming the Bell Bearing that can produce them at will.
