Elden Ring features as many terrifying and diverse enemies as it does ways to crush, slash, and impale those enemies. Due to the nature of the most powerful weapons and spells in the game, players must usually focus on a specific stat and gear build, such as the Blasphemous Blade build.

Other times, however, it is one very specific tool, spell, or piece of equipment that can simplify a difficult part of Elden Ring. For example, the infamous Lake of Rot becomes much less scary with a handful of preserving boluses in one's inventory. In a similar vein, the Eternal Darkness sorcery can smooth over more difficult sections with magical foes. Here's how to get it.

How to Get Eternal Darkness Spell

Surpassing Sellia

The first part of finding Eternal Darkness is unlocking the seal of Sellia, Town of Sorcery in Caelid. Players must seek out and light three flames after entering the town through the main gate or the Sellia Understair. There's a bit more to unlocking the Sellia barrier, but it brings other benefits too and is well worth doing. After collecting Sellia's treasure, head up through the hills behind the town.

The Winding Path

After Sellia comes a long trek up a winding hill, and it's well guarded. There are skeletons everywhere, and the first one, which wields a glaive, is deceptively powerful. There are also two boulders that will try and crush the player at inopportune moments, and they roll on their own time rather than at gravity's whim. After reaching the end of the skeleton gauntlet, players can stop at the Church of Plague to begin Millicent's questline.

The Bridge and the Tower

After the Church, players must continue along the path towards the gate of Sellia. The road is guarded by bats and, more seriously, Winged Dames, the flying, singing terrors that sometimes help the bats. It's often best to ride right past them, as they won't bother players too much. It's also an opportunity to find some crafting materials unique to Caelid.

Crossing the gate as a bridge is dangerous, but it's the only way forward. In the middle of the bridge/gate is a group of invisible Sellia spellswords, each quick on the draw and with a Carian Greatsword spell.

Get through them, and it's a straight shot to a watchtower with the spell inside... after defeating a Bloodhound Knight. Those who have fought Bloodhound Knight Darriwil know this enemy is no slouch -- be careful. The prize is a situational but useful spell that negates other spells and incantations.

Elden Ring is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
