There are a number of NPC questlines in Elden Ring whose directions and objectives are obscured by the purposefully ambiguous narrative style of the game. For example, a quest relatively early in the game tasks the player with giving a potion to another NPC, though they aren't told anything about their location, what the potion is, or what the alternatives are.

Edgar, the Commander of Castle Morne in the Weeping Peninsula, is a character whose quest can be started and completed before beating a single Great Rune holder, if you know where to go. Of all the questlines in Elden Ring, though, this one is among the most heart-breaking.

Talk To Irina, Found Near The Bridge Of Sacrifices

Irina is a Maiden that players can find near the Bridge of Sacrifices in the Weeping Peninsula (south of Limgrave main). Irina sits near a totally ruined carriage and a small army of soldiers who likely died defending her.

Irina tells the Tarnished about the uprising at Castle Morne and why she left, leaving her father Edgar in command of a small contingent of soldiers as Morne's last line of defense against the Demi-Human invasion force. Irina asks the player to give her father a letter that confirms her survival after the near-total annihilation of the Castle and surrounding areas.

Bring Her Letter To Edgar Atop Castle Morne

Edgar can be found on the very top of Castle Morne, sitting on a tower overlooking a small skirmish between Godrick Soldiers and Demi-Humans below. When you get to Castle Morne, head behind the Demi-Human bonfire to find a ladder leading upwards. Ascend the castle until you reach the very top – Edgar is found on a tower over the main entrance of the Castle.

As Commander, he feels it is his duty to protect what remains of Morne and ensure that the storied blade of the Castle doesn't fall into enemy hands. When you give him Irina's letter, he seems happy to know she's alive, but still insists that the legendary sword be retrieved before he leaves his post. The Sword of Castle Morne, the Grafted Blade Greatsword, is found on the beaches below.

Defeat The Leonine Misbegotten And Return To Edgar

From Edgar head back to the south end of the Castle and look for a drop behind the stone walls that leads to a Site of Lost Grace. The "Behind The Castle" Grace leads down to the cliffs behind Morne, which players must scale to find the sword of Castle Morne. There are a few items of use that can be found on the ramparts and cliffs here, so spend some time exploring.

Eventually, you will reach the bottom of the cliffs to find a beach overrun with Jellyfish. You can walk on the lightly submerged ground here, but watch where you step. Head through the large Fog Gate to find the Leonine Misbegotten, a Demi-Human boss who drops the Grafted Blade Greatsword upon defeat. Go back to Edgar once you have this sword, and he will finally choose to leave his post and go find his daughter Irina to live the rest of his days peacefully with what remains of his family.

Go Back To Irina Where Edgar Mourns Over Her Body

After exhausting his dialogue on top of Castle Morne, head back to where you first found Irina outside the Bridge of Sacrifices. Tragically, Irina wasn't able to hide forever and was slain where she sat behind the stone gate in the time it took to get to Morne, retrieve the Grafted Blade Greatsword, and convince Edgar to leave.

You will see Edgar leaning over her body here. He promises to get revenge on her killers, laments his commitment to duty over his family, and doesn't say much else. For reasons unknown between this and the next instance of meeting Edgar, he turns against the player.

Head To Liurnia Of The Lakes To Fight Edgar The Revenger

In a west-northwest area of Liurnia of the Lakes you will find the Revenger's Shack, a small run-down shed with a concerning amount of raw meat dumplings on the ground. Touch the Site of Lost Grace, and Edgar the Revenger, now turned against the Tarnished, will invade your world.

He isn't a particularly tough fight, not compared to some other named NPC fights and invaders throughout Elden Ring, but melee players will have a harder time than ranged as he can easily be broken with sorceries and incantations cast from afar. Upon death, he drops a powerful Halberd and a Shabiri Grape - an item that helps Maidens see light, and an item that Edgar was going to give to his daughter before her murder.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
