An Elden Ring player recently found a curious coincidence: one of the weapons in the game, the Death Ritual Sword, looks almost the same as one used by a powerful boss, the Divine Dragon, in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Elden Ring is filled with secrets and small details that gamers can find during their journey, so it’s not surprising to see people discovering more about them long after launch.

Both Sekiro and Elden Ring are among the highest-rated FromSoftware games. Sekiro was originally released in 2019 and took the Souslike formula to Feudal Japan, focusing more on intense action and less on RPG elements. Elden Ring, on the other hand, was launched in 2022 and tweaked the famous formula by being essentially an open-world Dark Souls. However, it seems that one odd aspect unites these games, besides belonging to the same genre.

An Elden Ring player called DIeGO3rr3 found an amusing connection between Elden Ring and Sekiro. According to them, one of the game’s best spears, the Death Ritual Spear, looks a lot like the sword used by the Divine Dragon from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The Divine Dragon is one of the hardest fights in Sekiro, due to being very gimmicky when compared to most bosses, and its ancient sword is one of its most distinctive visual features.

In the comments of the Reddit post, some people helped to explain why this weapon may be featured in both games and clarified that it’s most likely a coincidence and not a direct reference. Both Divine Dragon’s weapon and Elden Ring's Death Ritual Spear are based on a real-world item, the famous Shichishito, also known as the Seven-Branched Sword. This is a Japanese ceremonial sword that was manufactured almost 2,000 years ago and given to a Japanese empress, remaining an important cultural artifact. The design can also be found in other Japanese games, such as Monster Hunter, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, Soulcalibur, Okami, and others.

With the upcoming Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, it’s likely that FromSoftware fans will find even more interesting aspects to speculate on soon, as the expansion is said to greatly expand the game. According to recent reports, Shadow of the Erdtree may add new endings and be as big as two full-sized DLCs. At the moment, there is no official date for its release, but the expansion is expected between the end of 2023 and the first months of 2024.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
