Elden Ring is easily one of the most anticipated games of 2022, and fans can officially say that it releases next month. Of course, it’s the end of next month, but it’ll still be here before fans know it. With Elden Ring’s release date so close, more and more details are beginning to surface. As with all FromSoftware titles, there will still be plenty of mystery going on, but director Hidetaka Miyazaki recently discussed George R. R. Martin’s influence and one character named Godfrey (seen above).

In an interview with Edge Magazine, Miyazaki explained how he came to think of Martin as an old friend during Elden Ring’s early development and the two truly shared a passion for fantasy worlds. Miyazaki also explain that Martin only wrote Elden Ring’s mythology because FromSoftware felt like working on the story and in-game text would limit Martin’s creativity. One thing Miyazaki asked Martin was to create these heroes from the ancient mythos, and among others, Godfrey was born.

Godfrey, according to Miyazaki, is an embodiment of the mystique and heroic qualities of the past and “one of the major players in the game.” During the “heyday” of Elden Ring’s Golden Order of The Lands Between, there were two Elden Lords—the very same title players are trying to earn on their journey in The Lands Between. Godfrey was one of them and the very first Elden Lord, while he was also married to Eternal Queen Marika.

Godfrey is “representative of this period of grandeur and affluence. He represents everything great about the Elden Ring and The Lands Between at that time.” However, for reasons Miyazaki doesn’t touch on, Godfrey would be exiled from The Lands Between, becoming Tarnished. The player character themselves is Tarnished, really establishing that personal connection to the two. Godfrey’s rise and fall from grace, “embodiment of their long history and struggle,” and overall character is reflected in Elden Ring’s protagonist.

If there’s one thing FromSoftware titles are known for, it’s their difficult combat, but if there are two things, it’s how FromSoftware uses dark fantasy and environmental storytelling to flesh out the world and story. It adds a certain level of ambiance that really details the world of each and every Souls game, and it seems it will for Elden Ring too—with a touch of Martin’s influence as well.

Elden Ring releases February 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
