Sir Ansbach and Redmane Freyja are NPCs in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, and they are bound by a questline. While it is not requisite that players complete this quest, there is some unique equipment that can be earned by doing so. There is another NPC in Shadow of the Erdtree known as Hornsent, and progressing his questline can render Ansbach and Freyja's questline inaccessible. As such, players who want to complete the quest detailed in this guide should avoid helping or invading Hornsent if the opportunity to do so arises.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree - Ansbach & Freyja Quest Walkthrough
While this walkthrough attempts to minimize spoilers, it does reveal some narrative beats, the name of a mandatory boss, and the name of the final Legacy Dungeon in Shadow of the Erdtree .
1. Talk to Freyja at Three-Path Cross (Gravesite Plain)
After entering the Shadow Realm, players should make their way north to the Three-Path Cross Site of Grace in Elden Ring's Gravesite Plain. Fans will find Freyja at this location, and they should speak with her.
2. Talk to Ansbach at Main Gate Cross (Gravesite Plain)
Players should now travel west to the Main Gate Cross Site of Grace and speak with Ansbach.
3. Talk to Freyja in Shadow Keep (Storehouse, Seventh Floor)
Players will find themselves in Elden Ring's Shadow Keep, a Legacy Dungeon, as they progress along Shadow of Erdtree's critical path. At this location, fans should work their way to the Storehouse, Seventh Floor Site of Grace and speak with Freyja.
4. Get Secret Rite Scroll in Shadow Keep (Storehouse, Fourth Floor)
Players should now set their sites on obtaining the 
Secret Rite Scroll , a key item that is used to progress this questline. To find this item, fans should make their way to the Storehouse, Fourth Floor Site of Grace in Shadow Keep and then follow these instructions:
- Go west to a path that runs along Shadow Keep's exterior.
- Go left and ascend two flights of stairs.
- Move forward and look for a descending staircase on the left.
- At the bottom of the stairs, enter the room on the right.
- Approach the edge of the platform and look right to find the Secret Rite Scroll sitting on top of a table.
5. Talk to Ansbach in Shadow Keep (Storehouse, First Floor)
Elden Ring players should now head to the Storehouse, First Floor Site of Grace in Shadow Keep and walk north to reach a small room in which Ansbach can be found. Fans should interact with Ansbach, hand over the Secret Rite Scroll, and tell him about Freyja's decision. Players will receive the Letter for Freyja after performing those actions.
6. Give Letter to Freyja in Shadow Keep (Storehouse, Seventh Floor)
Players should now return to Freyja at the Storehouse, Seventh Floor Site of Grace and pass on the letter that they just received. Fans can then exhaust Freyja's dialogue to receive the Golden Lion Shield.
After this interaction with Freyja, players should check to see if an icon for Ansbach still appears on the map of Shadow Keep. If that icon is present, fans should return to the NPC near the Storehouse, First Floor Site of Grace and pass on Freyja's message. If that icon is not present, players can go directly to the next step.
7. Beat Messmer the Impaler in Shadow Keep
With Ansbach and Freya addressed, players should set their sights on reaching the end of Shadow Keep and defeating Elden Ring's Messmer the Impaler.
8. Talk to Leda at Highroad Cross (Scadu Altus)
Once Messmer the Impaler has been dispatched, players should make their way to the Highroad Cross Site of Grace in Elden Ring's Scadu Altus and speak with Leda until she talks about Sir Ansbach. If Leda is unwilling to make reference to Ansbach, fans should simply pass time at the nearby Site of Grace and try again.
9. Assist Leda or Ansbach in Shadow Keep (Storehouse, First Floor)
Players must now return to the room in Shadow Keep in which Ansbach was previously stationed, and they will find two summon symbols on the ground upon arrival. If a player interacts with the red symbol, they will be summoned to assist Leda in a fight against Ansbach. And if they interact with the gold symbo,l they will be summoned to assist Ansbach in a fight against Leda.
With respect to which symbol a player should select, it is recommended that they interact with the gold symbol and assist Ansbach. Indeed, that selection will ultimately yield two items that are inaccessible if the red symbol is selected: the Obsidian Lamina reaper and the Furious Blade of Ansbach incantation. Additionally, Elden Ring fans will be able to summon Ansbach for two fights later in the DLC if they help him here.
10. Fight Leda (Enir-Ilim)
Players must now continue to progress along Shadow of the Erdtree's critical path to reach Enir-Ilim, a mandatory Legacy Dungeon. Fans are guaranteed to encounter Leda in this location, and they will be forced to fight her and her allies. Before players interact with the red summon sign that initiates that fight, they should make sure to interact with the nearby gold summon sign to bring Ansbach to the battle.
11. Talk to Ansbach (Enir-Ilim)
After dispatching Leda and her crew, and looting a variety of Shadow of the Erdtree equipment from their bodies, players should use the nearby lift to ascend higher into Enir-Ilim. Fans will find Ansbach at the top of that lift, and they should interact with him to progress his questline.
12. Beat Final Boss
Players must now beat Shadow of the Erdtree's final boss, who can be found in an arena that is just beyond the lift.
There is a gold summon sign in front of the entrance to the arena that can be used to summon Ansbach for the fight. That said, it is possible to complete Ansbach's quest without bringing him into the battle, and some fans may want to simply ignore his summon sign.
13. Collect Loot from Ansbach's Body
Once the final boss has been defeated, players will find Ansbach's body in the arena, and they should loot it to complete his questline and receive the following items:
- Wise Man's Mask
- Ansbach's Attire
- Ansbach's Machettes
- Ansbach's Boots
- Obsidian Lamina
- Furious Blade of Ansbach
To reiterate, Ansbach's body will appear in the arena even if he is not summoned for the fight. If a player does not see the body, they should simply pass time at the nearby Site of Grace and check again.
